The A.J. Brown-to-New England trade saga is officially over. The Philadelphia Eagles dealt the three-time Pro Bowl receiver to the Patriots on June 1 for a 2028 first-round pick and a 2027 fifth-rounder, reuniting Brown with head coach Mike Vrabel, who coached him during his first three seasons in Tennessee.
Vrabel fielded football questions at his press conference without a single mention of the controversy that engulfed his offseason. Dianna Russini, who broke nearly every development of the Brown trade story going back to September 2025, wasn’t there to cover it, and Fox News/OutKick senior NFL writer Armando Salguero argues she was the only person who lost in this entire ordeal.
A.J. Brown’s Trade Validates Dianna Russini’s Reporting While Underscoring Her Downfall
Russini’s sourcing on the Brown trade was exceptional, as she was the first big NFL reporter to hint that the wide receiver wants out and the Patriots will be his next destination. Her reporting on the entire situation was lauded by Salguero, but he also revealed how Russini lost “big time.”
“It was one lovely victory lap for everybody. Except for Dianna Russini,” Salguero wrote. “Yes, this is about her as much as Vrabel and Brown. Those three names will be linked for a long time in NFL circles based on what happened going back as far as September of 2025, and then definitely through this offseason that was about, well, the relationship between the coach and the reporter.”
The controversy traces back to photos published by Page Six in early April showing Russini and Vrabel at a resort in Sedona, Arizona, ahead of the NFL owners’ meetings. The images depicted the two holding hands, embracing, and sitting together in a pool. After that, more old photos of the two went viral, and the scandal dominated the headlines.
“Brown wins. He’s wholly unscathed, in fact, and happy as a clam with a new team he grew up adoring,” Salguero continued. “Vrabel wins, too. Yes, he took some lumps, suffered some humiliating moments in front of reporters and had some family conversations he termed “very difficult,” but he’s ultimately none the worse for wear. And then there’s Russini. She lost. Big time.”
Russini resigned from The Athletic on April 14, and since then, she hasn’t publicly talked to anyone about her future or her alleged relationship with Vrabel.
“Russini called it when she told everyone the Patriots were interested,” Salguero continued. “And she was right again when she said earlier this year that Brown wouldn’t be traded around the start of the league year in March but watch out for June. She was dead-on accurate with practically all of it… Russini’s information was great but how she seemingly attained it eventually led to her resigning from The Athletic. And sullying her professional reputation.”
Russini spent nearly a decade at ESPN before joining The Athletic in 2023 and had established herself as one of the league’s most connected insiders. That reputation now carries an asterisk, and her future in the industry is uncertain.

Independent reporting remains a viable path, and her track record of accurate sourcing would serve her well. However, it will be fair to expect that people on social media platforms will make it very tough for Russini to continue covering the league.
