The 2025 NFL Hall of Fame Game offered fans a unique chance to celebrate the all-time greats of the game, while also getting their first taste of real, competitive football in more than five months. This year, the Los Angeles Chargers lined up against the Detroit Lions as the league celebrated the Hall of Fame class of 2025.
The story of the game was the performance of Chargers quarterback Trey Lance. After four seasons in the league, the 2021 No. 3 overall pick offered glimpses of the potential franchise quarterback the San Francisco 49ers envisioned he could be when drafting him out of North Dakota State.
Lance’s ascension certainly won’t be the only noteworthy story to come out of the 2025 NFL preseason, as the rest of the teams in the league get ready for their first taste of game action.
When Is the Next NFL Preseason Game?
The Chargers, led by Lance, dominated the Lions to the tune of a 34-7 win. Detroit was thoroughly outmatched on both sides of the ball by the Chargers, making the game relatively uncompetitive in short order.
The Chargers-Lions game is merely the first installment in the NFL’s near month-long preseason schedule. However, there are no other NFL preseason games this weekend, as the Hall of Fame Game is always the lone contest before the first full weekend of exhibition action.
There won’t be any more games this weekend. Instead, the preseason reconvenes on Thursday, Aug. 7, when the Baltimore Ravens host the Indianapolis Colts as the first contest in a three-game slate that night.
For the following three weeks, teams will compete as they determine who makes the final 53-man roster before the regular season kicks off on Sept. 4.
NFL Preseason Schedule
While the preseason kicked off with a glimpse of a player who could turn out to be the next quarterback to have a Sam Darnold-type renaissance, other teams still have a lot of key questions to answer over their exhibition schedule.
For a franchise like the Cleveland Browns that has four quarterbacks competing for the starting job, it offers a chance to figure out who’ll be under center potentially for the long term. The same goes for the New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts’ QB1 battles.
