The most dominant storyline of the NFL offseason has been the romantic scandal between Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini, which saw another chapter added when a photographer trailed Vrabel at Salt Lake City Airport, as revealed in a TMZ report.
While Russini resigned from The Athletic, similar questions about the New England Patriots head coach’s future are lingering, and a former player weighed in.
Ex-NFL LB Explains Why Patriots HC Mike Vrabel Won’t Get Fired for Dianna Russini Scandal
The NFL has seen many scandals over the years, but Vrabel and Russini’s reported romantic involvement is a first. After photos of the two vacationing together were leaked, the scandal has been a series of PR debacles.
Lies and vagueness ultimately saw Russini step away from The Athletic, and now questions about Vrabel’s future at the helm of the Super Bowl runners-up are also begging for answers.
Now, NFL Analyst Emmanuel Acho, who played linebacker in the NFL, explained why the coach won’t be fired.
“Vrabel got off easy by the court of public opinion,” he said on “Speakeasy.” “But Vrabel got off easy because Vrabel didn’t leave much of a footprint. Vrabel didn’t look as idiotic while leaving the footprint — that’s why Vrabel got off easy. If Vrabel had a bunch of tweets that we were pulling up, if Vrabel had a bunch of Spotify playlists that he sent to Dianna Russini, then Vrabel wouldn’t have gotten off this easy.”
The controversy sparked debate about journalist-source relationships, as Vrabel and Russini’s acquaintance dates back to the head coach’s days with the Tennessee Titans. The reporter covered the team back then, from where many believe a deeper connection formed.
“But at the end of the day, Vrabel didn’t name his child Dianna,” Acho added. “Dianna named her child Michael, so that’s why Vrabel got off easy, as it pertains to Dianna Russini, [who] left her fingerprints all over the crime scene.”

“I do not anticipate Mike Vrabel getting fired, because this is not a fireable offense,” he added. “It might be a deplorable moral offense by some people’s standards… So I just know it’s not a fireable offense.”
The Daily Mail reported that the Patriots are considering Mike Tomlin as a potential replacement if Vrabel steps down, voluntarily or otherwise. Tomlin only recently stepped down as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ head coach, so whether he’s interested in a quick turnaround is yet to be seen.
We still have a way to go before the 2026 season kicks off, so the NFL community will be closely monitoring the Vrabel-Russini scandal.
