In the 2025 NFL Draft lead-up, the common consensus was that Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders were the top two quarterbacks who could legitimately go in the first round. However, after Ward was taken with the first overall pick, the selection for Sanders never came on Day 1. Then, things went from bad to worse as Day 2 passed and his name was still on the board.
Over time, a ton of theories have emerged as potential reasons for his slide in the draft. However, in some corners of the internet, a common idea is that the owners collectively decided to nix his ascendence after the comments made by Sanders and his father, the legendary two-time Super Bowl champion, Deion Sanders.
As a result, a legendary wide receiver isn’t buying the latest comments from Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam about Sanders’ selection.
Why Is A Former NFL Receiver Alleging Collusion Against Shedeur Sanders?
It wasn’t until the fifth round on Day 3 that Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders was finally put out of his misery. Fifty picks after drafting Dillon Gabriel, Cleveland decided to add a fifth quarterback to its roster with the 144th overall pick in the form of the Colorado Buffaloes’Â superstar.
At the time, the prevailing notion was that Cleveland owner Jimmy Haslam, who had visited Colorado and spent a long time with both the Sanders, had made the decision over his coaching staff. Instead, he made it clear in a statement that it was general manager Andrew Berry who made the decision to add Sanders to their roster. “If you would’ve told me y’all are gonna pick Shedeur, I would say, ‘That’s not happening.'”
He made his meaning clear. “Andrew Berry made the call to pick Shedeur.” So far, the move has given the Browns a potential pathway to long-term sustainable success. Between their rookies and two first-round picks in the 2026 Draft, they have a chance to find their quarterback of the future.
However, Pittsburgh Steelers legend and former Super Bowl champion Antonio Brown isn’t buying the comments from Haslam at face value. Immediately, he responded on X with, “Jimmy doesn’t want to publicly admit he broke the agreement between the 31 other owners.”

Right after the draft, conspiracy theories emerged about the NFL owners collectively deciding to axe Sanders’ chances in the league. With Buffaloes HC Deion Sanders making comments about which teams he would allow his son to go play in, many believed owners across the league took offense to his proud stance.
A controversial figure throughout his career, Brown spent a decade in the league, earning seven Pro Bowl selections, while leading the league in multiple receiving categories multiple times. However, his outspoken nature made him a notorious figure, particularly in Pittsburgh.
Even after retirement, he hasn’t been one to shy away from controversies and conspiracies, making his comments additional fuel to the Sanders fire.
