The scandal involving New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini, a former reporter for The Athletic, is continuing to unfold.
The deeper that interested parties and affiliated gossip networks dig, the more they’re likely to uncover. That includes potential collusion during Vrabel’s time as a head coach in the league.
Mike Vrabel’s Relationship with Dianna Russini Helped ‘Cheat’ Competition
The impact this affair has had on the personal lives of Vrabel and Russini goes without saying. Vrabel has been married for nearly three decades, while Russini is married to Kevin Goldschmidt, with whom she has two children.
Off the field, this is something that simply has to be settled between both sides, and that will surely happen in due time. However, this story isn’t going away anytime soon.
That’s especially true if the league decides to investigate the deeper realm of this affair. Thor Nystrom, who covers the Minnesota Vikings, didn’t mince words in his assessment. He doesn’t care that Vrabel and Russini cheated in their marriages, because that isn’t his business; however, that’s just scratching the surface.
“I care deeply that it appears Vrabel and Russini combined to cheat Vrabel’s competitors on the field,” he wrote on X.
This stems from the belief that, by allegedly being in bed with a prestigious reporter for a major outlet, Vrabel had a leg up on the rest of the competition when it comes to acquiring players.
I could care less that Vrabel and Russini cheated on their marriages.

Investigating this is a hornet’s nest. But if you don’t, you open Pandora’s box.

Before he led the New England Patriots to a Super Bowl appearance last season, Vrabel spent six years as the Tennessee Titans’ head coach. He led them to three consecutive playoff berths, including an AFC Championship Game appearance in 2019. However, when seven-time Pro Bowl receiver Julio Jones became available from the Atlanta Falcons following the 2020 season, it’s believed that Russini helped chill his market.
She reported that the Falcons were offered a first-round pick for Jones, prompting teams interested in acquiring the wideout to back off because they didn’t want to pay that price. That didn’t end up being the case, and the Titans would later acquire Jones and a sixth-round pick for a second-round pick and a fourth-round pick.

There’s also speculation that Russini was behind much of the drama between A.J. Brown and the Philadelphia Eagles over the past year, with her being responsible for reporting the majority of it. The tension would ultimately culminate in a fractured relationship between the Eagles and Brown, setting the wheels in motion for a trade to Vrabel’s Patriots, expected to take place after June 1, barring unforeseen circumstances.
It’s what Nystrom called “transaction manipulation,” and argued that the saga is already becoming a distraction for the Patriots.
“Will the NFL investigate the obvious collusion, or become complicit itself in condoning transaction manipulation?” Nystrom asked.
He skipped Day 3 of the NFL Draft to put on a performative photo shoot in an airport gift shop.
They have, and actively are — thats not the question.

A whirlwind of consequences has played out following the alleged affair, and it could only be the tip of the iceberg.
Russini stepped down from her job amid backlash, while Vrabel, entering his second season as the Patriots’ head coach, attended counseling. He agreed to miss the third day of the 2026 NFL Draft last weekend as a result.
