‘She Could Sue Him’ — NFL Insider Warns Jets QB Geno Smith About Looming Legal Threat

Even after the police closed the investigation, one insider isn't sure that Geno Smith is done with the battery accusation.

Geno Smith’s legal issue hung like a cloud over the New York Jets organization. With some wild accusations and a police investigation into their new starting quarterback, it seemed like the curse was continuing on this year as well.

Thankfully, as the police investigation concluded, the two-time Pro Bowler avoided facing any charges. But, as his focus turns to the upcoming season, one insider isn’t sure if the situation has completely boiled over just yet.

Geno Smith Might Not Be Free Yet

The entire exchange began after a woman, Kristen Stubbs, claimed on Instagram that Smith had allegedly physically assaulted her, broken her computer, and stolen $800 from her car. On the other hand, the former Seattle Seahawks star maintained his innocence.

Countering with accusations of his own, he told the police that Stubbs entered his home without permission and grabbed multiple luxury watches and jewelry, which he valued at $20 million. Both individuals were investigated for battery.

However, it didn’t reach a conclusion, and the case was deemed inactive and closed on July 14, 2026, due to conflicting accounts, a lack of independent witnesses, and insufficient video evidence to determine the primary aggressor.

As a result, Mike Florio of NBC Sports concluded that the investigation was over. “So, moving forward, if the NFL tries to investigate this and she’s not going to cooperate with the authorities, if she doesn’t cooperate with the league, nothing’s going to happen.”

However, he believed there was still one potential outcome that could be dangerous for Smith. “The one thing to watch, because it was mentioned that her lawyer eventually contacted the police. A civil lawsuit isn’t impossible. The standard for proof is much lower.”

Going into detail about the legal hoops that she would have to jump through, Florio explained that the civil lawsuit avenue would become a tougher battle for the veteran quarterback.

“Preponderance of the evidence versus beyond a reasonable doubt. She could sue him. That would dust this thing off, and she’ll have up to two years under Florida law to do so if she’s going to sue for any type of personal injury. So that’s where that one stands.”

Eventually, though, he believed there was just one way that the case could become anything substantial. But, he added an “asterisk” to the entire resolution, given that possibility still being on the board.

“It’s over with an asterisk. And it’s a small asterisk, but it could come back at some point, especially if she were to have a sudden change of heart and call the police and say, ‘I’m ready to give you a sworn statement,’ which she supposedly is not going to do.”

It remains to be seen whether these legal issues will continue to plague Smith in the future. But at least for the time being, it looks like he’s moving on from the situation and focusing on rebuilding his image in the NFL while also bringing the Jets back to prominence.
