‘This Is the Way Howie Roseman Works’ — NFL Insider Warns a Surprise AFC Team Could Hijack Patriots’ A.J. Brown Trade

The heavily rumored Eagles-Patriots A.J. Brown deal may not be final, as other NFL squads inevitably loom.

The Philadelphia Eagles will not be closing their doors on wide receiver A.J. Brown and a move to the New England Patriots.

While plenty of speculation explains the Ole Miss alumni heading to the Pats, one NFL insider believes general manager Howie Roseman will listen to plenty of offers.

Howie Roseman Expected To Accept Several Offers on Brown

NFL insider James Palmer joined Kay Adams on the “Up & Adams” show, where Roseman’s dealings with Brown came into conversation.

Adams opens by discussing the Eagles and Patriots having a potential arrangement in place and are simply waiting till June 1, the opening day of a crucial period in the NFL season. Sports Illustrated’s Mike Kadlick explains the significance behind the date.

“When a player is released or traded around the start of the new league year (mid-March), their remaining prorated bonus money and guaranteed salary accelerates onto the team’s upcoming season’s cap and becomes what’s called “dead money”-a charge for a player no longer on the roster,” said Kadlick. When that same move occurs after June 1, however, teams are able to spread that dead cap-hit over two seasons instead of taking the entire hit in one year.”

Given the monetary implications of the unresolved case, the aforementioned insider, Palmer, believes Roseman is open for business.

“Here’s the deal, nothing can be put in place, this isn’t like a release when you can designate a guy post June 1, with trades it has to happen,” said Palmer. It has to become official after June 1. If anything, right now, it’s just a wink and a nod in terms of an agreement.”

Palmer continued, “We all know Howie Roseman, we all know how he works. He can obviously be ‘yeah, I think we should get the negotiations up and going’ and they had negotiations, they haven’t really had any to my knowledge or my understanding recently, but there’s been some offers, some talk with the Pats for sure.”

Palmer builds on the idea of perhaps depleting the Patriots’ reign over a Brown trade by continuing to support the general manager’s boldness.

“If you think Howie Roseman for a second is not gonna be calling every other team, and I mean not just taking calls, but making calls, to other teams on A.J. Brown, you’re a fool,” said Palmer. “This is the way Howie works, he’s gonna try to get other teams involved, he’s gonna try to see what the best options he can get for himself are.”

Adams previously mentioned the Jacksonville Jaguars as another potential suitor for the 28-year-old, to which Palmer responded:

“I think Jacksonville, there’s been like ‘is Brian Thomas Jr. available? He’s not available. Is he available?’ I’ve heard both behind closed doors, out in the open,” said Palmer. “Are they gonna make some moves in terms of how that wide receiver rooms built? If Travis Hunter’s not gonna be playing receiver as much, do you wanna go and make a big splash?”

As fire burns over a Philadelphia-Jacksonville agreement, Palmer describes the strategy of Jaguars general manager James Gladstone.

“I’ll say this, James Gladstone, is kinda like Les Sneed [Los Angeles Rams general manager], where you have to have him sit on his hands, he’s always looking to do something big,” said Palmer. “He’s always looking to try and make a move, and at the deadline, man, was he trying to make some things happen.

“I mean big things, they didn’t happen, but he was trying to make some big moves at the deadline, so I wouldn’t put anything past James Gladstone down there in Jacksonville. I wouldn’t put anything past Howie in trying to find the best deal possible because the 2027 draft is outstanding; there was a reason teams were not dealing 27′ picks in this draft.”

Brown’s value regarding pick compensation remains a mystery; however, Palmer has heard that fellow Philadelphia receiver, DeVonta Smith, is well prepared to assume the role of WR1.

“The more the merrier sometimes with Howie Roseman,” said Palmer. “He’s gonna keep looking around even though everyone has it kind of written down that A.J. Brown is going to the Patriots.”

The insider concludes that Roseman’s seemingly endless timetable to make a deal plays a key role in the uncertainty around New England being cemented. June 1 will be an entertaining yet potentially question-unanswered day for many in the NFL.
