More than two months ago, The Athletic launched an investigation connected to Dianna Russini’s alleged relationship with New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel. Shortly afterward, Russini stepped away from the publication, but the situation has continued to generate questions across league and media circles.
So, while The Athletic continues its investigation, NFL insider Mike Florio recently revealed a major complication.
Mike Florio Revealed a Big Obstacle in Investigation of Dianna Russini-Mike Vrabel Scandal
During a new segment on “Pro Football Talk,” Florio explained gathering information on Russini may be more difficult now that she is no longer part of The Athletic.
“She doesn’t work there, so it makes it harder for them to get answers from her,” Florio said.
And it makes sense, as Russini has largely disappeared from public view since leaving the outlet. She removed her X account and has not addressed the controversy since publishing her resignation letter on April 14.
She has also firmly defended her reporting and rejected criticism surrounding the story. Russini described the coverage of the situation as “unmoored from the facts.” That stance leaves little room for The Athletic to extract information from her.

Then, The Athletic already announced that this investigation is a detailed examination of editorial processes and internal standards, not personal behavior.
Because of that narrow scope, The Athletic may ultimately decide to keep certain conclusions in-house. Even if additional information emerges during the process, the publication is not necessarily obligated to release every detail publicly.
But the publication announced that it will maintain transparency with its employees regarding this investigation. However, Florio noted that such a move could eventually push details beyond internal channels and into public view. And it will bring legal drama.

“Whenever The Athletic says whatever it says, and they probably will announce their findings publicly, even if they may be inviting a lawsuit from Dianna Russini,” Florio said. “Because whatever they provide to their employees privately, somebody’s going to leak it. And they’ve already committed to transparency with the employees.”
If The Athletic decides to share its findings, or if a leak from an internal report hints that Russini’s work was affected without solid evidence, it might lead to a significant defamation lawsuit. This situation could have serious consequences for everyone involved.
As for The Athletic’s investigation, reporter Michael McCarthy shared the latest update on where things stand. “Update on The Athletic’s Dianna Russini investigation. Sources say investigation is still ongoing,” McCarthy wrote on X on June 18.
So, now, all eyes are on The Athletic’s final report, as it could determine how this entire saga ultimately ends.
