‘That’s Been Frustrating’ — NFL Insider Reveals 1 Aspect of Mike Vrabel-Dianna Russini Scandal That ‘Frustrated’ Him

Ian Rapoport expressed his frustration over how "insiders" have been portrayed in the aftermath of the Mike Vrabel-Dianna Russini scandal.

The Mike Vrabel-Dianna Russini scandal has taken over the NFL offseason and will likely remain a significant topic of discussion as we get closer to the season.

While Vrabel has already discussed the situation in multiple press conferences, we have yet to hear from Russini aside from her initial statement and resignation letter when she quit The Athletic. Recently, NFL insider Ian Rapoport weighed in and shared one particular aspect of the saga that has “frustrated” him.

Ian Rapoport Voices Frustration Over Mike Vrabel-Dianna Russini Scandal

Recently, Rapoport admitted that he finds the Vrabel-Russini controversy “really sad” since he knows both people involved.

“Watching it play out in public has been really sad. I’ve seen this in other walks of life and in other sort of like celebrities or important people, I’ve never really seen it with people that I know, and it’s really different and like not good and sad just like all around,” Rapoport said on the “Between The Tackles” podcast.

On the same podcast, he also defended “insiders” since there has been a lot of debate about the role in the aftermath of the scandal.

“I have been for sure frustrated at a lot of people talking about what they think the job of insider is without actually knowing,” Rapoport said. “That’s been frustrating to me over the last month or so.”

Rapoport was asked about the difference between a national NFL insider and a team beat writer, and he said they aren’t too different.

“The job is still the same. It’s finding out news,” Rapoport said. “It’s touching base and talking to all parties, as many as you can. It’s confirming it, making sure that it comes out in the most accurate and truthful way possible, while also doing it as fast as possible and giving the reader or viewer as much information as you can.”

Being an NFL insider isn’t an easy job, as it takes a lot of time and effort to accumulate sources and gather exclusive information and news. An insider also has to decipher what is legit and what is not, as not every scoop is worth pursuing.

Lately, the job of an insider has been put under the microscope. There have been plenty of debates about Russini’s actions and journalistic ethics. Recently, award-winning author Jeff Pearlman called out insiders for exchanging favors for scoops and crossing a line with their relationships.

“Hey, come to my BBQ. Hey, let me work you out. Hey, you’re my buddy. Hey, let’s hang out. Hey, tell me stuff, it’s OK,” Pearlman said. “That’s access journalism 101. That’s exchanging for exchanging.”

It will be interesting to see if the Vrabel-Russini situation dies down or if it’ll continue to make headlines as the NFL season gets closer. Will Vrabel still be coaching the Patriots come Week 1 when New England faces the Seattle Seahawks in the season opener?

For now, it seems like his job is safe since the team has stood by him and the NFL has said it won’t investigate the matter, but no one knows what the future holds.
