Some moments on live television are funny, others are uncomfortable, and sometimes they’re both. That was the case during a recent NFL Network segment featuring Washington Commanders wide receiver Deebo Samuel, when a handshake gone wrong turned into something much more awkward.
Deebo Samuel Visibly Annoyed During Live Segment on NFL Network
While wrapping up, host Mike Garafolo reached out for a fist bump. Samuel didn’t return the gesture. Instead, he hesitated and awkwardly motioned that he couldn’t shake hands.
The reason? A jammed finger, an injury that hadn’t been made public until that exact moment.
What followed was a clumsy attempt at a fist bump, some light laughter from the studio crew, and Samuel looking visibly annoyed. To most viewers, it was a throwaway moment. But to Samuel, it looked like something he really didn’t want out there, especially not on live TV.

Garafolo later tried to clear the air on social media, saying, “And for the record, I got my left-handed fist bump at the end. They cut away too soon. Colleen Wolfe, she of the laugh track in the background, can vouch for me.”

According to team sources, the jammed finger happened near the end of Saturday’s practice. It wasn’t considered serious, more of a routine jab than anything else. But that doesn’t mean it was something Samuel wanted broadcast.
He’s entering a contract year with a brand-new team, trying to prove himself again after being traded from the 49ers. Every detail matters in that situation, and even something as small as a finger injury can become an unwanted headline.
Entering Contract Year With Washington Commanders, Samuel Wants To Prove He Belongs
It’s simple to see why Samuel could be annoyed. Players are aware of how quickly small details may develop into larger narratives. Additionally, perception might be just as crucial as performance while attempting to ensure your league’s future with a team.
In addition, there is the ongoing contract drama with fellow Commanders receiver Terry McLaurin, who has reportedly asked for a trade. There’s already a lot of tension in that locker room. Samuel likely just wanted to keep things quiet, avoid distractions, and focus on football.
But this is the NFL, and quiet moments don’t always stay that way.
In the end, it was only a minor accident, nothing serious, just one of those live TV errors that remind us that these guys are also people. However, it served as a reminder to Samuel of how easily things can get out of control when you’re in the spotlight.
