NFL GM Makes Feelings Clear on Shedeur Sanders’ Decision Not To Throw at Combine

It’s no secret that New York Giants are eying a top quarterback with the No. 3 pick in April’s NFL Draft, and that could be Shedeur Sanders.

Giants general manager Joe Schoen isn’t losing any sleep over Sanders’ recent decision to skip throwing at the NFL Scouting Combine. With the Colorado quarterback opting to showcase his arm at a later Pro Day instead, Schoen made it clear that he has zero issues with prospects choosing when and where to perform.

As the pre-draft process ramps up, teams like the Schoen’s Giants continue to evaluate their options at quarterback, keeping a close eye on all the top signal-callers in this year’s class.

Giants GM Joe Schoen ‘OK’ With Shedeur Sanders Not Throwing at NFL Combine

While some scouts and analysts debate the significance of throwing at the NFL Combine, Schoen emphasized that a one-day performance in unfamiliar conditions won’t make or break a prospect’s evaluation.

“I’m OK with that. … To me, you’ve never thrown to these receivers before,” Schoen told Jordan Raanan, who covers the Giants for ESPN NFL Nation.

Schoen continued further, discussing how the decision impacts

“If they throw, that’s great. I’m never gonna downgrade them for not throwing. If they don’t have a great throwing session, I’m not gonna downgrade them for that either because they’ve never thrown to these guys. It’s timing, it’s anticipation, it’s the type of routes these guys run, their ability to certain routes.

“I think it’s important as a quarterback when you’re throwing to these guys, so if a guy decides he doesn’t want to throw [at the NFL Combine] and wants to throw at his Pro Day, I’m OK with that.”

For quarterbacks like Sanders, who are expected to be top picks, the Pro Day setting offers a more controlled environment with their college teammates. Colorado’s Pro Day is still awaiting an official date, but no matter when it is, it’s one of the most anticipated events of the NFL‘s offseason cycle.

In addition to Sanders, two-way star Travis Hunter will also get to showcase his skills in front of scouts. The Heisman winner was listed as a cornerback for the NFL Combine, which allows him to work out earlier in the week if he so chooses.

Schoen shared that New York staff has done its due diligence on the top signal-callers in this year’s class and will continue until the 2025 NFL Draft.

Giants Under Pressure To Fix QB Debacle via NFL Draft

After the Daniel Jones debacle, the Giants are under tremendous pressure to hit on the quarterback position in 2025. In the latest 2025 NFL mock draft from PFSN, it’s Miami (FL) quarterback Cam Ward — not Sanders — projected to be under center for the Big Blue.

“The Washington State transfer flirted with the NFL Draft last year before returning to college football with Miami,” PFSN’s Owain Jones wrote. “It’s a move that paid off for Ward, who looks likely to be drafted in the first 10 picks. A creative force with incredible playmaking skills and instincts, the Hurricanes quarterback has had some issues with ball security but brings the artistic flair seen in modern passers.”

Much like in 2023 with Bryce Young and C.J. Stroud, fans will have to wait to see how the Ward vs. Sanders game plays out.
