What Is NFL Flex Scheduling and When Does It Start? Complete Rules, Schedule, and More

The NFL is entering the flex scheduling portion of the regular season. Here is everything you need to know and what to look out for.

The NFL schedule release each spring is a massive event, but not every game lives up to the hype once the season begins. Injuries, slumps, and surprise contenders can turn a prime-time showdown into a dud. That’s why the league introduced flex scheduling in 2006, a system designed to ensure the best matchups get the national spotlight.

Flex scheduling enables the NFL to shift games into various broadcast windows, particularly prime time, to maximize excitement for fans and ratings for networks. In 2025, the rules have expanded further to cover Sunday, Monday, and Thursday night games.

When Does NFL Flex Scheduling Start in 2025?

Sunday Night Football (NBC):

Flex scheduling begins in Week 5. Between Weeks 5 and 10, the league can flex up to two games. From Week 11-17, the NFL can flex any Sunday night game. Week 18 is fully flexible, with all games subject to time changes to highlight playoff implications.

Monday Night Football (ESPN):

Flex scheduling begins in Week 12. Games can be moved into or out of the Monday night slot with 12 days’ notice.

Thursday Night Football (Prime Video):

Flex scheduling is allowed between Weeks 13-17. Teams must be given at least 28 days’ notice, due to shorter rest and logistical challenges.

What Are the Rules for Flex Scheduling?

The NFL can’t just move games at will. There are clear guidelines:

Notice Requirements:

Sunday Night Football: 12 days in advance (Six days for Week 18).

Monday Night Football: 12 days in advance.

Thursday Night Football: 28 days in advance.

Network Protections: CBS and FOX can protect certain marquee games from being flexed out of their Sunday afternoon windows.

Week 18 special rules: The league waits until after Week 17 to set kickoff times, ensuring games with playoff stakes get prime-time treatment.

Why Does the NFL Use Flex Scheduling?

The goal is simple: maximize meaningful football in prime time.

A September matchup that initially looked promising can lose its luster if one team collapses. Conversely, a midseason clash between surprise contenders can suddenly become must-see TV. Flex scheduling ensures fans aren’t forced to watch irrelevant games during the league’s most visible windows.

How Does Flex Scheduling Affect Fans and Teams?

Flex scheduling can be frustrating for fans who plan their travel months in advance. A game originally scheduled for 1 p.m. ET could suddenly be moved to 8:20 p.m. ET, forcing changes to flights, hotels, and tailgate plans. Teams also face adjustments, with altered routines and recovery schedules.

Still, the league argues the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. Prime-time games drive ratings, revenue, and exposure, and flex scheduling ensures the best teams get the spotlight.

Flex scheduling is the NFL’s way of keeping prime-time fresh and relevant. In 2025, it starts in Week 5 for Sunday night, expands in Week 11, and now includes Monday night (Week 12) and Thursday night (Weeks 13-17) games.

For fans, it means more meaningful football under the lights. For teams, it means staying flexible. For the league, it’s another way to ensure the biggest stage always features the biggest games.
