Christian Gonzalez’s contract limbo is finally over.
The New England Patriots have agreed to a record-breaking four-year, $135 million extension with Gonzalez, including $102 million guaranteed. The deal gives his contract an average annual value of $33.75 million and makes him the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.

The agreement came after days of uncertainty surrounding Gonzalez’s future. There were even concerns that the star cornerback would miss the Patriots’ Week 1 game against the Seattle Seahawks.
Fans had previously criticized VP of football administration Matt Groh over the delay in reaching a deal. However, the Patriots managed to reach an agreement before the situation carried into the regular season.
Patriots beat reporter Doug Kyed summed up the situation simply: “Deadlines spur action.”

Carter Donnick focused on how Gonzalez’s contract compares with Devon Witherspoon’s recent extension, while also praising the Patriots for getting their star cornerback locked up. “It’s seriously so weird how long/drama filled this was after Spoon’s deal because it’s truly just a hair above that one. No-brainer for New England here, top 3 corner in the game,” Donnick said.

One fan looked at Gonzalez’s deal compared to Patrick Surtain II’s contract and suggested Surtain’s deal now looks even better by comparison. “Surtain extension just looks better and better.”
Foxboro Joker reacted to the size of the contract, saying: “Yeesh. Lotta dough.”

Another fan suggested the negotiations may have ended only after Gonzalez made his intentions clear: “He 100% told them he was going to sit out and they finally paid up.”

One commenter compared Gonzalez’s new deal with Surtain’s salary, arguing that Surtain remains the better value despite Gonzalez setting a new record. “Friendly reminder that the undisputed best CB in the NFL is only making $24 million per year, which is by far the best value contract in the league. Now everyone can go back to sleep.”

Patriots Secure Gonzalez for the Long Term
Gonzalez’s $33.75 million annual salary sets a new benchmark for elite cornerbacks, surpassing recent market-setting deals such as Witherspoon’s.
For the Patriots, the biggest win is keeping one of their most important defensive players under contract for the prime years of his career.
After helping the Patriots reach the Super Bowl, Gonzalez now has long-term security in New England. More importantly, the Patriots can head into Week 1 without the contract drama hanging over the team.
