James Cook finally got paid. After holding in for a week during training camp, Cook returned to practice, and a new deal followed. The Bills and Cook agreed to a four-year extension worth $48 million with $30 million guaranteed. After a huge season, Cook had been waiting to be paid like one of the top running backs in the NFL.
After finally receiving his contract, NFL fans took to social media to react to the extension, and they weren’t all that supportive.
NFL Fans React to James Cook’s Extension
Cook has reached the Pro Bowl in two of his three seasons with 1,000+ yards rushing in those years. Coming off a season with 1,009 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns, Cook wasn’t ready to step on the practice field without being compensated fairly. Now that he has his contract, the Bills can hit the ground running.
While the Bills will be very happy to have resolved this situation, some fans aren’t as quick to share that same sentiment.
“12 million for a non game changing Running back. The value itself seems appropriate for him compared to the rest of the market, I just didn’t want the Bills paying for it,” said one fan.

While this is the current rate on the market for a player of his caliber, fans aren’t quite ready to agree that he’s worth that contract.
“Eh. $12M a season when the Bills had all the leverage isn’t ideal,” said another fan.

One fan compared the value of his contract to Panthers RB Chuba Hubbard’s extension from last season.
“The Chuba Hubbard contract looks better every day,” said the fan.

A round of applause for the Panthers’ front office. Hubbard signed a four-year, $33.2 million extension with about $15 million guaranteed in 2024. Hubbard rushed for 1,195 yards and 10 touchdowns, outrushing Cook’s 2024 yardage output. The average annual value for Hubbard’s contract is cheaper than most at his caliber, as the price on the running back market continues to rise.
Other fans took this as a chance to analyze his value in fantasy football. It’s safe to say some fans are hesitant to take Cook after his extension.
“Way overpaid… do not draft James cook too early in your drafts,” said one fan.

Another fan echoed, “had him last year, he was a stud for me but i am staying away from him this year, too much drama even though he signed. he got overpaid. Dumb Bills.”

Even after acknowledging Cook’s value last season, fans blamed the Bills for overpaying him. One fan expects a significant snap increase for Cook after his new extension to make the contract worth it.
“He better get a huge bump in snap count now. Not paying someone 12 a year to play 50 percent of the snaps,” one fan said.

Lastly, one fan isn’t all convinced with the Bills rushing attack with Cook.
The Bills have to be the worst run consistent contender in football right now. They would be bang average or worse if they didn’t have Josh Allen https://t.co/nZKexCmLD9

“The Bills have to be the worst run consistent contender in football right now. They would be bang average or worse if they didn’t have Josh Allen,” said a fan.
Fortunately for the Bills, they have Josh Allen, who is one of the best. As a dynamic threat, there’s not many better, if any, he can run the ball at an elite level and make high-level throws all over the field. Allen is looking to bring the Bills to their first Super Bowl appearance since 1994, where they lost their fourth Super Bowl in succession.
Bills fans have been patiently waiting for their first Super Bowl and have put their faith in Allen to take them there. They will be hoping that Cook’s production can get them over the hump and to the mountaintop of the NFL for the first time in franchise history.
