For the better part of two years, NFL fans have not seen Brandon Aiyuk on the field. After tearing his ACL and MCL simultaneously in 2024, the superstar wide receiver went AWOL on the San Francisco 49ers.
As the relationship continued to deteriorate, he was eventually placed on the reserve/left squad. Now, as a divorce seems inevitable, he has made his interest in the Washington Commanders abundantly clear. Unfortunately, the league might have moved past him in his time away from the gridiron.
Brandon Aiyuk Could Face Brutal Reality Check
Immediately a starter for the 49ers after being drafted in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Aiyuk quickly established himself as a premier force on the field. Putting together back-to-back 1,000-yard campaigns, he became a key piece of their offensive dominance.
However, after failing to see eye to eye with the organization over his contract extension in 2024, the relationship continued to sour. Even though they eventually agreed to a four-year, $120 million extension, Aiyuk’s devastating knee injury and subsequent refusal to attend rehab derailed his career entirely.
After being ranked at number six on PFN’s WR Impact Metric in 2023, he was off the list entirely in 2024. But his behavior off the field, and the complete lack of communication with the 49ers, may have hurt his stock even more drastically in the eyes of other teams.

Insider Jason La Canfora of SportsBoom compiled mounting evidence of the lack of a market for Aiyuk in the league’s current landscape. He wrote, “NFL front offices at this point have serious reservations about Aiyuk being in the right mindset on and off the field to contribute.”
“A top executive from a team that has continued to pursue the receiver market told me Aiyuk is not a consideration for him at this point, even on the minimum contract, and the 49ers have long since given up on getting anything in trade,” he added.
“I couldn’t bring him into my locker room with my quarterback,” one executive told Canfora.

That comment holds even more merit now for Canfora, as he pointed to the growing distance between the player and the management in Washington.
“The fact that the Commanders are now distancing themselves from Aiyuk via the media at a time when he is speaking more and more about his desire to come to Washington is not going unnoticed, either.”
It remains to be seen how his relationship with the 49ers officially ends. Moreover, as it looks likely that he wants to return to the field, the final months of the offseason could finally give him a new home if a team takes a chance on him.
While Canfora believes that it is becoming increasingly less likely, a prove-it year for the former All-Pro could be the exact push that he needs.
With the discontent between himself and San Francisco continuing to grow over the years, a change in scenery could give him a new lease on life.
