Early Combine History (1982–1986)
The NFL Scouting Combine traces its origins to 1982, when National Football Scouting (NFS) held the first "National Invitational Camp" in Tampa, FL with just 163 players. During the first three years (1982–1984), multiple separate camps were held by different scouting organizations — NFS, BLESTO, and others — each conducting their own evaluations for their member clubs.
In 1985, all 28 NFL teams agreed to consolidate into a single unified event, merging the separate camps into what became known as the NFL Scouting Combine. After being held in Tempe, AZ (1985) and New Orleans (1986), the combine moved permanently to Indianapolis in 1987 at the Hoosier Dome, where it has remained ever since.
The Hoosier Dome was renamed the RCA Dome in 1994. The combine moved to Lucas Oil Stadium in 2009 after it opened in August 2008. The event was not televised until NFL Network first aired coverage in 2004.
