NFL Combine News: Eagles GM Howie Roseman Hints at a DeVonta Smith Contract Extension

Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman hinted at signing wide receiver DeVonta Smith to an extension during his press conference at the NFL Combine.

Although Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown is receiving a lot of attention this offseason, DeVonta Smith is the wide receiver that Eagles general manager Howie Roseman is focused on.

Roseman discussed Smith’s potential contract extension during his press conference at the 2024 NFL Combine.

Howie Roseman Doesn’t Want ‘Homegrown’ DeVonta Smith To Leave

Despite all of the questions surrounding Philadelphia’s defense following last season’s epic collapse, the Eagles have plenty of work to do on the offensive side of the ball as well.

Signing their rising star wide receiver Smith to an extension will likely be a pivotal part of Philadelphia’s plan this offseason. Smith has played at a high level since joining the NFL after being drafted by the Eagles in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft.

Roseman appeared to agree with that statement, given his answer at his 2024 NFL Combine press conference, when asked about the importance of Smith’s potential contract extension.

“Obviously DeVonta is an incredible person, incredible player, homegrown. Without getting into specifics, he’s obviously not the kind of guy we want to leave,” Roseman said.

Given the potential departure of another fan favorite in pass rusher Haason Reddick, it would be smart for Roseman to sign Smith to an extension early in the offseason.

DeVonta Smith Should Be Philadelphia’s Top Priority

The Eagles’ general manager, Roseman, has shown an urgency to get ahead of the market with contract extensions during his tenure in Philadelphia. Roseman did exactly that last offseason when the Eagles signed Jalen Hurts to an extension on April 17, 2023.

It was crucial for Roseman to be the first general manager to sign his young, talented quarterback to a contract extension last offseason. He should attempt to do the exact same thing with Smith this offseason.

Similar to the quarterback position, wide receiver has quickly grown into a premium position, with prices skyrocketing with every deal that is signed. Considering the talent at the position, Roseman should prioritize signing Smith to a contract extension before anything else this offseason.

Several other elite wide receivers are due for contract extensions including Justin Jefferson, CeeDee Lamb, and Amon-Ra St. Brown. Some believe that Jefferson’s next contract could reach over $100 million in total guaranteed money.

If the Eagles can sign Smith to an extension before any of those other deals are completed, Philadelphia would gain a massive advantage. Despite the rise of the NFL’s salary cap, securing young talent while staying ahead of a skyrocketing market is huge.

Roseman clearly understands the importance of retaining homegrown talent on team-friendly contracts. Extending Smith should be the next move in Roseman’s journey in staying ahead of the NFL’s scorching hot market.
