How the Dallas Cowboys are going to handle Dak Prescott and his contract has been an ongoing conversation since their season ended. With Prescott set to count just shy of $60 million against the salary cap in 2024, decisions regarding the quarterback and his future have now come to the forefront. The team faces the prospect of deciding just how to navigate the future and if that includes Prescott.
Fresh off the best statistical season of his career, the team suffered another disappointing loss in the NFC Wild Card Round that saw the team’s 28-year NFC Championship Game drought continue. Despite that, Stephen Jones makes it clear that the Cowboys intend to go into the future with Prescott under center.
Update on Dak Prescott’s Contract Extension
If you thought that the Cowboys were going into the future with anyone other than Prescott under center, you probably haven’t been listening to Jerry and Stephen Jones very closely.
Ahead of the NFL Combine, Stephen stopped to speak with the media and was asked about Prescott and his ongoing contract situation. He took the time to once again throw the team’s support behind Prescott and their desire to get a contract extension done.
“Oh yes, absolutely,” Jones started when asked if they wanted to get a contract extension done with Prescott.
“Our whole thing with Dak is him being a Cowboy. That’s all that’s on our mind.”
Prescott is fresh off a season where he was voted second-team All-Pro, made the Pro Bowl, and led the NFL in touchdown passes with 36 while only throwing nine interceptions. The veteran QB thrived in his first season in a Mike McCarthy-led offense as they tailored the unit to his strengths, and it paid off in the regular season as they finished 12-5 and won the NFC East.
Despite the team’s rough postseason performance, the Jones family looks undeterred from their plans to keep Prescott in the fold long-term.
Can Prescott Take Cowboys to the Next Level?
Despite gaudy regular-season numbers and 36 wins in the last three years, where the contention among Cowboys fans and those around the league lies is the failure of epic proportion they displayed in the Wild Card Round that made this feel all too familiar for those who follow the team.
The Cowboys were embarrassed by the Packers, and that performance has only intensified the questions around Prescott and his ability to take this team over the top to end their 28-year championship drought.

On a statistical basis, the Cowboys are looking to lock up a team leader coming off the best regular season of his career. However, in Dallas, it is purely about winning championships. The expectations are for much more than just regular-season success, leaving some to wonder if the team would move on and start new after another failed campaign.
The answer to that question looked to be answered once again ahead of the 2024 NFL Combine.
