The Washington Commanders lost more than just a football game on Sunday afternoon, as a moment of on-field aggression has led to significant consequences. Star defensive tackle Daron Payne was ejected from the game against the Detroit Lions, and now, it appears his absence will extend beyond a single contest.
Why Did the NFL Suspend Daron Payne for One Game?
In the second quarter of the matchup, Payne was ejected after punching Lions star wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown. Following a league review, NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo reported that Payne has been issued a one-game suspension for his actions. “Commanders DT Daron Payne has been suspended one game by the NFL for unsportsmanlike conduct for punching Lions WR Amon-Ra St. Brown yesterday,” Garafolo wrote on X.

While Payne can appeal the decision, he will likely miss the upcoming Sunday game against the Miami Dolphins. This situation draws a contrast to an earlier incident in the season opener, when Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter received a one-game suspension for spitting on Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.
In that case, the league claimed that since the incident occurred on the first play, Carter had retroactively served his suspension. That same logic does not apply here, but Payne may still want the league to hear his case.
Following the 44-22 loss, the story grew more complicated. Fellow Commanders defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw claimed that Payne was retaliating. Although cameras did not capture the initial exchange, Kinlaw insisted he saw St. Brown throw the first punch.
“Yeah for sure, and they [saw it], too,” Kinlaw said, per ESPN. “It’s some bulls—. 100 percent. Daron retaliated. The refs literally saw the first punch. I don’t blame him for the way he reacted. Tempers got to flaring.”
However, St. Brown offered a different version of events. The Lions’ star claimed Payne reacted to something he said after a touchdown. “Then we end up scoring, and I go up to him,” St. Brown said. “I say a little something, nothing crazy, and then he decides to swing on me.”
The play in question was an acrobatic touchdown catch by St. Brown, which put Detroit ahead 14-3 late in the first half. After the score, he pointed to former President Donald Trump, who was in attendance, and began his signature YMCA dance while talking to Washington’s defenders.
Regardless of who started the conflict, losing Payne is a significant blow for the Commanders’ already shaky defense. According to our PFSN impact metrics, he holds a 76.0 grade, ranking him 37th among all eligible defensive tackles this season.
