The New York Giants have been dysfunctional for the better part of a decade. Owner John Mara has brought in and fired several head coaches and general managers, but many have questioned his retention of Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen.
Giants have been slipping to new lows under Daboll and Schoen, but one NFL analyst claims it’s Mara himself who is to blame for the franchise’s dysfunctionality.

NFL Analyst Blames Owner John Mara For Giants Dysfunctionality
New York is in an unenviable position heading into the 2025 NFL Draft after a 3-14 record in 2024. The less said about their choice of Daniel Jones over Saquon Barkley, the better. But beyond that mishap, the team is now entering the season without a true quarterback on the roster, and NFL analyst Mike Florio didn’t hold back on the franchise’s dysfunctionality during a recent episode of “Pro Football Talk.”
“The problem is the dysfunction flows from the top of the organization, and John Mara has been the common thread. I don’t know how they won two championships this century,” he said.
Florio argued that Mara had fired the right guys early while holding on to the wrong ones for too long, which ultimately resulted in Barkley and Jones’ blunders.
“We’re going to the league meetings in a week and a half, and I’m going to have awkward conversations as it is. But I think that the problems in the Giants come from John Mara. He’s fired guys too quickly, he’s held on to the wrong guys for too long, and I think the challenge is for him to stay true to his guns here and keep his guys,” he added.
While Florio didn’t specify who was to be fired and who was to be kept, he did make it clear that the problems started with Mara.
Florio, however, added that Mara should have either fired Daboll and Schoen right after the season or given them more than a year to build for the long term rather than looking for quick fixes. He suggested that the Giants should pivot to a rookie quarterback instead of a veteran and start building for the long term.
New York is picking third overall in the 2025 NFL Draft and has bright chances of landing Shedeur Sanders. However, they have been linked to Aaron Rodgers in free agency, suggesting that Daboll and Schoen are under pressure and looking to win as many games as they can in 2025.
