After months of drama and rumors, Aaron Rodgers signed a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers. While that always seemed to be the assumption, there was still a scenario where Rodgers retired from the NFL and left the Steelers scrambling for an answer at the QB position.
The question remains as to what exactly Rodgers has left in the tank. The four-time NFL MVP is on the tail end of his career, and his time with the New York Jets was a mixed bag for a lot of reasons. However, one NFL analyst pointed out one pitfall that could be problematic for Rodgers and the Steelers.
Aaron Rodgers Still Has the Arm, but Is It Enough for the Steelers?
Greg Cosell hopped on the “Ross Tucker Podcast” and revealed one glaring flaw, although it is not a new one.
“Theoretically, I think Rodgers fits any offense. He still throws the ball really well. The only issue with Rodgers now is he doesn’t move as well, and that is an issue, and that shows up on tape,” Cosell claimed
“As far as throwing the ball, there’s no problem there. I think they’ll try to make this a heavy run offense, there’ll be boot action that he can certainly do. … I think they let Najee Harris go and they drafted Kaleb Johnson.”
Rodgers has never been a mobile quarterback by any means, so this isn’t a groundbreaking revelation here. But after his return from injury, he arguably did not move as well inside or outside the pocket as he used to.
However, he seemed to struggle in his return from the 2023 torn Achilles tendon. During his second season with the Jets, in 2024, PFSN’s QB+ metric gave him a grade of C-. This ranked him 21st in the league, below the signal caller he will be replacing, Russell Wilson.

The Steelers’ offense looks different with Harris gone and George Pickens traded to the Dallas Cowboys. However, bringing in veteran wide receiver Robert Woods and acquiring superstar wide receiver DK Metcalf is a big boost for the offense.
Still, the Steelers’ WR room is pretty thin, and some worry about injuries derailing that group for the Steelers and Rodgers.
Arthur Smith is the Steelers’ offensive coordinator, and he has been known to lean into a run-heavy approach time and time again, so perhaps that’s the case there.
But, at the end of the day, Rodgers throws the ball well, even though he is 41 years old, and his presence should be big for the team as they try to make another playoff run during the 2025 season.
