Which Teams Are the Best and Worst at Covering the Spread in 2023?

Coming out of Week 11, we have a four-way tie atop the ATS standings for 2023. The Lions, Jaguars, Buccaneers, and Cowboys have all covered 70% of their games this year. At the other end of the table are the Panthers, with a 1-7-2 ATS record ATS.

Two of the teams that have been the best covering the spread this year have potential implications for the Thanksgiving games this year. The Lions are 7.5-point favorites at home against the Packers, while the Cowboys are double-digit favorites against the Commanders.

At home, Detroit has a 3-2 record ATS this season, while they are 6-2 as favorites. Meanwhile, the Packers are 5-5 ATS this season and 2-3 on the road. Green Bay has failed to cover in their last three road games and is 2-5 overall in their last seven games. Those two covers came in the last three weeks, but both were in home games.

As for the Cowboys, they’ve covered their last two and four of the last five. Dallas is 7-1 ATS when favored, with their only stumble coming back in Week 3 against the Cardinals. They’re also 4-0 ATS when playing at home this year as they embark on three home games in a row.

What makes this game interesting is that all five of the games that the Commanders have covered this year have come in the same circumstances as this Thanksgiving matchup. Washington is 5-1 on the road and 5-1 as underdogs. But when you combine those two elements, they’re 5-0 as a road underdog.

The final Thanksgiving game of the week sees the Seahawks and 49ers do battle in a game pitting a team 5-4-1 ATS with one that is 5-5. There’s not much to split between this pair in terms of the ATS record, but the health of QB Geno Smith could determine where this line settles entering Thursday night.

Finishing with the Panthers, Carolina travels to Tennessee to face the Titans in Week 12. The Titans have covered 40% of their games this year but are 5-1 in their last six. However, the five times they have failed to cover in those last six have either been road games or the game they “hosted” in London. As a true home team, the Titans are 3-0 ATS.
