Luka Dončić’s return to Dallas on April 9, hit different. Back in the building where it all began, the former Dallas Mavericks star couldn’t hold back the emotions. From the tribute video before tip-off to the standing ovation that followed, it was a night filled with memories, love and a little heartbreak.
Dončić was super emotional but he didn’t just soak it all in. He put on a show, dropping 45 points and helping the Lakers grab a huge win. This one meant something extra.
Luka Dončić Opens Up After Emotional Win in Dallas
After the final buzzer, Dončić spoke with ESPN’s Lisa Salters on the court, still wearing his heart on his sleeve. Reflecting on the tribute video played before tip-off and the warm reception from the home crowd, the 26-year-old was honest about how hard the night really was.
“I don’t know how I did it, because when I was watching that video, I was like, ‘There’s no way I’m playing this game,’” Dončić said. “But you know, all my teammates had my back. They were really supporting me, so I really appreciate that.”

It was his first game back at the American Airlines Center since the stunning Feb. 1 trade that sent him to the Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a first-round pick. A trade that shocked the NBA world and clearly hit Dončić hard.
After nearly seven seasons, two trips to the Western Conference Finals, and a Finals appearance last year, he was gone just like that. No proper goodbye. But on Wednesday he got his moment and he made the most of it.
Dončić torched the Mavericks with 45 points on 16-of-28 shooting, including 7-of-10 from deep. He added eight rebounds, six assists, and four steals—doing a little bit of everything. Most of his damage came in the first half, where he poured in 31 points and hit six threes. It was vintage Luka—crafty stepbacks, no-look passes, and that calm killer instinct.
And the Dallas fans showed nothing but love. From cheers during warmups to a full standing ovation after the video, the appreciation was loud and clear. Luka apparently was moved and it showed.
Lakers Surge to Playoffs as Dončić Delivers Vintage Performance
The performance was even more powerful considering what had happened just days earlier. Dončić was ejected in the fourth quarter of a tough loss to OKC following a technical, a moment that seemed to haunt the Lakers down the stretch. This time, though, he stayed locked in and returned the favor with a performance that will live in highlight reels for years.
With this win, the Lakers improved to 49–31, jumped back into the third seed in the West, and clinched a playoff berth. But more importantly? the Slovanian superstar got his closure and gave Dallas fans a night they won’t forget.
