‘The Kinda Greed They Talked About in the Bible’ — NBA World Reacts as Victor Wembanyama Breaks Tim Duncan’s Spurs Record

Victor Wembanyama eclipses Tim Duncan's playoff debut scoring record, giving the Spurs a 1-0 series lead over Portland.

When playoff basketball returned to the Frost Bank Center after seven years, Victor Wembanyama made sure the wait was worth it. Brushing off his playoff debut jitters, he led the San Antonio Spurs to a 111-98 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday night.

The NBA community watched as Wembanyama rewrote the history books, surpassing Spurs legend Tim Duncan during an emphatic Game 1 win.

The Spurs opened their first-round Western Conference playoff series against Portland with high expectations.

Entering the matchup as the No. 2 seed after a blistering 62-win regular season, San Antonio had the scales tipped in its favor against a Portland team that clawed its way to the No. 7 seed via the play-in.

It was evident within the opening minutes that the Trail Blazers would have no defensive answer for Wembanyama.

The Frenchman finished his historic playoff debut with a game-high 35 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 blocks in 33 minutes of action. 21 of his 35 points came in the first half, setting the record for the most points in the opening half of a postseason debut since the play-by-play era began in 1997.

By the time the final buzzer sounded, Wembanyama had surpassed Duncan’s franchise record of 32 points for a playoff debut set in 1998, and it did not take long for social media to erupt in a frenzy over the 22-year-old’s clinic under the bright lights.

“JUST IN: Victor Wembanyama has surpassed Tim Duncan for the most points in a Spurs playoff debut,” Legion Hoops shared.

“Wemby is unfair lmao,” Yahoo Sports writer Kevin O’Connor posted.

“Spurs went from David Robinson to Tim Duncan to Victor Wembanyama…This the kinda greed they talked about in the Bible đŸ˜đŸ˜,” Hater Report quipped.

“WEMBY PLAYOFF DEBUT: 35 POINTS, 5 REBOUNDS, 2 BLOCKS, 62% FG,” NBA Central highlighted.

When asked if he feels the immense weight of following in the footsteps of Spurs legends like Duncan and Robinson, especially with both Hall of Famers watching him from the front row, Wembanyama offered a different perspective.

“I wouldn’t say weight. I would say it feels safe,” Wembanyama said. “It feels like if you trip, there’s a lot of hands that’s ready to catch you.”

As Wembanyama stood tall, the Spurs’ supporting cast did their part to secure the win. Stephon Castle and De’Aaron Fox each added 17 points, and Devin Vassell chipped in 15 points.

On the other side, despite Deni Avdija’s 30-point, 10-rebound double-double, Portland was simply no match for the high-flying Wembanyama.

With a 1-0 series lead, the Spurs will take no prisoners as they work to keep their momentum rolling when Game 2 tips off on Tuesday in San Antonio.
