‘Unbelievable Turn of Events’ — NBA World Reacts as Magic Stunningly Upset No. 1-Seeded Pistons in Game 1

The eighth-seeded Magic's emphatic Game 1 win over the No. 1-seeded Pistons sparks widespread disbelief.

The Orlando Magic entered Sunday’s Game 1 first-round NBA playoff clash against the Detroit Pistons as a significant underdog.

However, the eighth-seeded Magic overcame late-season dysfunction to decisively take down the Eastern Conference’s No. 1 seed 112-101, leaving the NBA world stunned.

Magic’s Emphatic Game 1 Win Over Pistons Sparks Disbelief

Detroit was a juggernaut all year, capping off a 60-win regular season and boasting the league’s No. 2-ranked defensive rating (108.9), trailing only the defending NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder (106.5). The Pistons also managed to hold onto their top seed despite superstar guard Cade Cunningham’s late-season absence due to a collapsed lung.

Conversely, the Magic, plagued by stagnant offense, stumbled to a 45-37 finish, needing two play-in games to seize the East’s eighth and final playoff spot. This, combined with rumblings of Orlando coach Jamahl Mosley being on the hot seat, had many pundits anticipating a short series against Detroit.

Instead, the Magic led wire-to-wire in Game 1, matching the Pistons’ physicality and winning the rebounding battle 45-39.

While Cunningham delivered a playoff career-high 39 points, it ultimately went to waste, as he received little help from his supporting cast. Aside from veteran forward Tobias Harris, who chipped in 17 points, no other Detroit player finished in double figures.

On the flip side, Orlando had five players tally at least 16 points, spearheaded by star forward Paolo Banchero’s 23-point, 9-rebound, 4-assist performance on 8-for-15 shooting (53.3%).

The contest’s lopsided nature sparked widespread disbelief on X, with many lauding the Magic’s improbable turnaround.

“Pretty unbelievable turn of events for Orlando to go from where the Magic were last Wednesday to obliterate Charlotte and then go into Detroit and win tonight. Pretty much no one outside of Orlando saw that one coming, and we have at least one spicy series now!” ESPN’s Tim Bontemps reacted.

“Orlando!!!! The Magic looked dead-dead just five days ago. Nope. Here we go,” Yahoo Sports’ Kevin O’Connor exclaimed.

“A lot of the worries people had about the Pistons and the lack of scoring/shooting around Cade coming up here in Game 1. It’s Cade vs the Magic,” The Athletic’s Esfandiar Baraheni pointed out.

“Oh snap … Magic talking that talk, too. Players on and off the court trolling the Pistons team and their fans. Need Game 2 ASAP,” Dallas Mavericks reporter Landon Thomas wrote.

“Detroit is in BIG trouble. They have zero physical advantages vs this team. I’d even argue Orlando is bigger & they have WAY more dudes who can make something happen with the ball in the halfcourt. Cade is going to have to be AMAZING. Playoff *matchups* are so fascinating,” The Volume’s Jason Timpf cautioned.

With Sunday’s letdown, the Pistons extended the longest home playoff losing streak in NBA history to 11 games, a dubious mark that dates back to 2008. Cunningham and Co. will likely need a far more well-rounded team effort to avoid a disastrous 2-0 series deficit during Wednesday’s Game 2 home clash.
