James Harden’s time with the Los Angeles Clippers might be coming to an abrupt end after recent reports revealed his desire to leave.
While the Cleveland Cavaliers appear to be the favorite to land the veteran star, other teams are also being floated as interested in pursuing his services. How about a reunion with the first team of his career, the Oklahoma City Thunder?

Thunder Have the Means To Acquire James Harden
Harden began his career in the league when the Thunder selected him third overall in the 2009 NBA Draft.
It was there that he made his way up the ranks, transforming into one of the best sixth men in the league during his early years. After winning Sixth Man of the Year and helping the Thunder reach the NBA Finals in 2012, he embraced superstar status after the franchise traded him to the Houston Rockets.
He took hold of his duties and never looked back, becoming a consistent All-NBA and All-Star player, winning the MVP Award in 2018 and three scoring titles. Fast forward to 2026 with the Clippers: while he’s past his prime, he can still produce at a high level at age 36.
Which props up the idea of a potential reunion with the Thunder. He might have unfinished business to settle with the franchise after his controversial departure in the 2012 offseason. Nonetheless, PFSN writer Josh Weil suggested that it can benefit both parties by helping them compete for a championship.
“A reunion is a fun thought here, as Harden could have a legitimate chance to finally get his first ring if pursued by the Thunder. The Oklahoma City offense has been inconsistent, and while they are still playing at a high level, you can see they are playing below their potential on some nights. A steady shooter and facilitator like Harden could be the answer to those woes,” Weil wrote.
“OKC obviously has the assets to get a deal done, including owning the Clippers’ 2026 unprotected first-rounder in a pick swap (which LA would certainly love to get back).”
Clippers Aim To Climb Up Rankings Amid Harden’s Trade Rumors
The Cavaliers could end up being the team to land Harden from the Clippers if they ultimately send Darius Garland in the rumored trade. However, the Thunder could surprise many by acquiring their former star and reuniting in one of the most surprising ways by the trade deadline.
In the meantime, Los Angeles looks to improve its playoff position. The team has a 23-28 record so far this season, sitting at ninth place in the Western Conference standings. They have a 0.5-game edge over the Portland Trail Blazers and a 3.5-game edge over the Memphis Grizzlies.
The Clippers are at home for one matchup before going on a four-game road trip. They host the Cleveland Cavaliers, with tip-off on Feb. 4 at 10:30 p.m. ET.
