The Golden State Warriors are sitting at a 24-19 record. They hold the eighth spot in the Western Conference and are starting to find their groove again. But there is still one issue hanging over the team that just will not go away: the Jonathan Kuminga situation.
This is something many believed was settled during the offseason. Clearly, it is not. Now, Stephen Curry has finally broken his silence on the matter.
Stephen Curry Addresses the Jonathan Kuminga Situation
After the Warriors’ win against the Charlotte Hornets on Jan. 17, Curry sat down for his postgame interview. Reporters wasted no time asking him about the Kuminga drama brewing in the background.
Curry’s response? Straight to the point. He made it clear that the situation is not a distraction for the team.
“It’s not a distraction at all. It’s a very unique situation, but our job is to just keep playing, keep winning. It’ll resolve itself one way or the other,” Curry said.
Curry went further, explaining that the Warriors are no strangers to these kinds of problems.
“You’ve been around for the last three, four years. We’ve done it this whole time, so very, very well trained in this area to just play basketball,” Curry added during the interview.
While Curry projects confidence, Kuminga’s absence has been hard to ignore. The young forward has not played since Dec. 18 and has been a healthy scratch for nearly a month — a significant shift from how the season began.
When the season started, Kuminga was on fire. He looked like a different player, full of confidence and energy. He even earned a starting spot in Steve Kerr’s lineup. Everything seemed perfect. The young forward was finally finding his place.
Then things took a turn. Slowly but surely, Kuminga started disappearing from the regular rotation. More minutes on the bench, less time on the floor. According to Kerr, the issue comes down to fit. Kuminga has struggled to mesh with Jimmy Butler III and Draymond Green in the current system.
“I’m disappointed for him that things didn’t continue to go the way they did the first couple of weeks. At the same time, it was going to be tricky to start JK, Jimmy, and Draymond at the two, three, and four. I think anybody can see that’s a tough combination, just based on shooting,” Kerr said in an interview.
That tension has now reached a breaking point. ESPN insiders Anthony Slater and Shams Charania recently reported that Kuminga officially requested a trade on the first day he became eligible to be moved. Since that report surfaced, trade rumors have been swirling across the league. What happens next remains uncertain.
