Despite winning back-to-back MVP awards and an NBA championship, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has faced questions about whether he could eventually leave the Oklahoma City Thunder for another organization, such as his hometown Toronto Raptors.
Amid the discourse, Gilgeous-Alexander’s father, Vaughan, explained why he believes his son is a Thunder for life, barring any unforeseen circumstances.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s Father Shoots Down Future Raptors Move
On Tuesday, Gilgeous-Alexander’s father and Philadelphia 76ers star guard Tyrese Maxey’s father, Tyrone, released the first episode of their new show, the “No Flukes Podcast.”
During their conversation, the two discussed the importance of a player’s environment and how limiting distractions has helped Gilgeous-Alexander and Maxey develop into All-NBA-level players. The former’s father went one step further, adding that OKC offers a stronger environmental fit than Toronto.
“People ask, ‘What does Shai do in OKC? And how does he like it?’ He loves it because all Shai wants to do is hoop. … It’s a perfect fit,” Gilgeous-Alexander’s father said.
“As opposed to being somewhere where there’s nightlife, this, that, or in Toronto, where everybody’s going to be on your [expletive] saying, ‘Yo, give me tickets, give me this, give me that.’ Shai’s perfect where he is in OKC. I don’t think he’ll ever leave unless politics or something happens. … When it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
SGA’s dad says he’ll never leave OKC for Toronto because family would always be asking him for tickets, and he doesn’t see him leaving for a big market with nightlife distractions.

Born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Gilgeous-Alexander has represented his home country at the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup, the Paris 2024 Men’s Olympic Basketball Tournament, and most recently, the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Americas Qualifiers.
Simply put, it wasn’t entirely far-fetched to speculate that the 28-year-old could return to his native country and play for the Raptors somewhere down the line.
In light of his father’s comments and his immense success with OKC, a move to Toronto, or any franchise for that matter, does not appear to be in the cards for the two-time MVP.
The Thunder arguably have the NBA’s brightest future thanks to their exceptional front office and coaching staff. The organization has a plethora of draft picks and high-level talent already on the roster, including two All-NBA-caliber players in Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams.
Gilgeous-Alexander should be leading the Thunder for years to come, and it may only be a matter of time before he brings a second Larry O’Brien Trophy to OKC.
