‘Nobody in That Class Is Ever Gonna Be Better Than Me’ — Pelicans Rookie Derik Queen Sends Bold Message to NBA Draft Peers

Pelicans' Derik Queen exudes confidence after a No. 13 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, declaring he’ll outshine his peers and make Joe Dumars look like a "genius."

Maryland sensation Derik Queen entered the 2024‑25 college basketball season as a relative newcomer, but he swiftly transformed into one of the nation’s most dynamic big men.

Towering at 6’10”, Queen averaged 16.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per game for the Terrapins. The Big Ten Freshman of the Year and first team All‑Big Ten honoree led the Terrapins to a 27-9 record.

But on Saturday, June 28, Queen’s confident declaration about other draft rookies not being “in the same class” as him sparked a frenzy among the hoop community.

Rookie Derik Queen Claps Back at Analysts for Criticising Pelicans Trade Up

In a bold maneuver, Pelicans Executive Vice President Joe Dumars traded up from No. 23 to No. 13 to secure Queen on Wednesday during the first round of the 2025 NBA Draft. Furthermore, Dumars also sent an unprotected 2026 first‑round pick to the Atlanta Hawks to bring in the Maryland phenom.

This trade was harshly criticized by analysts such as Bill Simmons, who called it the “dumbest” decision made by the Pelicans. Following this, Queen gave a befitting response.

The rookie declared during his introductory press conference on June 28, exuding the very self‑belief that fueled his rise at Maryland.

“I don’t think nobody in that class is ever going to be better than me. I block all of the noise out. (Joe) got a lot of faith in me. Most of those guys I beat on in high school, so it doesn’t really matter,” he said.

However, he kept his declaration well-balanced, sharing his intention on keeping his head in the game, avoiding getting overconfident on the court, and making Dumars “look like a genius.”

“I know that the NBA is a whole different level, so I just got to continue to get better. Don’t get too big-headed, don’t get too low, and just beat on them next year when they come in and make Joe look like a genius,” Queen said.

Queen’s confidence is rooted not just in raw talent but in a decorated prep career. A consensus five‑star recruit, he stared at Montverde Academy, joining a lineage of NBA prospects. At St. Frances Academy, he posted a 56‑point game and earning MaxPreps National Freshman of the Year nod, before transferring to Montverde.

New Orleans Criticised for Acquiring Derik Queen via Trade

To give a background overview on the controversy, the Pelicans’ aggressive trade for Queen drew swift criticism from pundits across the basketball world.

Simmons of The Ringer lambasted the move as “one of the five dumbest trades of this decade,” questioning the logic behind surrendering future draft picks for a player who had yet to prove himself at the professional level.

“This is when I lost my mind. I blacked out. This was one of the five dumbest trades of this decade. I was speechless. I just can’t believe it. And who is it? It’s our guy, Joe Dumars. And now he just traded away their unprotected first-round pick,” Simmons told Sports Illustrated.

Simmons continued with his harsh words, “What the f— does [Dumars] think is going to happen next year? Does he think they’re going to be a five seed? What is he doing? They might have the championship belt now of biggest mess of a team.”

Dumars defended the rookie and his decision to draft him by saying, “I’ve been doing this for way too long to give credence to naysayers. I will say this, though: We’re going to trot our own path here. We’re not going to go by anyone else’s playbook. These are the guys that we really, really wanted as Pelicans and we’re super, super happy to have them here.”

In New Orleans, Queen joins a roster filled with rising star Zion Williamson and fellow rookie Jeremiah Fears. New Orleans envisions Queen as a foundational piece alongside Williamson and Fears in a young core built for sustained contention.

While skeptics question the durability of his early swagger, the Pelicans believe Queen’s hunger and proven track record of leading winning teams will validate their bold draft‑night investment.
