The standoff between Jalen Duren and the Detroit Pistons in restricted free agency has reached the month of September, as both teams still have a chasm to bridge in contract negotiations. Duren is coming off a season in which he made the All-NBA Third Team.
However, there have been considerable questions regarding his long-term viability as Cade Cunningham’s running mate in the Motor City after he played poorly for plenty of stretches during the 2026 NBA playoffs. And now, there remains a significant gap between Duren and the Pistons in contract talks which is threatening to prolong this extended saga even further.

According to the latest report from ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, the Pistons recently offered Duren a five-year contract which would pay him around $35 million annually. Meanwhile, Duren is holding out for a contract that would pay him “in excess” of $40 million per season.

That remains a huge gap at this juncture of restricted free agency, and both sides are showing no signs of budging. The Pistons, while not currently close to the second apron, are wary of committing a max-caliber contract to Duren given his shaky 2026 playoff performance and the need to preserve future flexibility for an Ausar Thompson extension.
Fans are torn on which party to side with in this restricted free agency saga. A few of them believe the Pistons should just meet Duren’s demands, giving him leeway, considering he’s only 22 and still has plenty of room to grow, postseason struggles notwithstanding.

However, the prevailing sentiment is that the Pistons already intend to offer him a fair contract, and Duren should take it and run.

Some are even theorizing that asking for a contract the Pistons have no way to fork over is Duren’s way of asking out.

Detroit cannot lose Duren for nothing, and the 22-year-old big man won’t be able to get his big payday this year if he decides to leave, considering how much cap space around the NBA has dried up this deep into the offseason.
The reasonable conclusion to this drawn-out contract negotiation drama is that Duren and the Pistons eventually find a middle ground that satisfies both parties. When that happens, however, it is a little unclear, considering that there remains a significant gap in the two sides’ valuation.
