The Detroit Pistons have made several moves this offseason, but Jalen Duren’s contract situation remains one of the biggest talking points. They continue working toward a resolution, and Detroit remains committed to keeping him, with contract negotiations at a standstill.
NBA Insider Shares Update on Jalen Duren’s Pistons Future
Duren is coming off a career-best season, earning his first All-Star and All-NBA selections and boosting his value ahead of restricted free agency. Those honors prompted Duren to seek an extension worth $287.1 million, but the Pistons reportedly have no interest in committing that much money to the young star.
The Los Angeles Lakers and Sacramento Kings have been linked as potential suitors for Duren, but neither team has submitted an offer sheet that would force Detroit to make a decision.
ESPN’s Dave McMenamin also reported that there currently aren’t any serious suitors willing to offer Duren a “max or near-max contract,” leaving the Pistons under no pressure to increase their offer.
As Detroit prioritizes maintaining financial flexibility for the future, McMenamin noted that the two sides remain far apart regarding the value of Duren’s next contract.
NBA insider Brett Siegel also provided an update on the situation during an appearance on “Clutch Scoops” on Saturday, saying there has been virtually no movement in negotiations.
“There’s been zero progress since… two weeks ago,” Siegel said. “Maybe around the time of summer league, they were having discussions, and the sides were very far apart. Nothing has really changed on that. The Pistons’ offer is pretty much what it is. It’s somewhere in that $30- $35 million annual range.”
“They don’t view him as a max-level guy, as he and his camp do, and that’s why the situation is going to continue to drag on… But I’ve heard nothing about sign-and-trades. The Pistons are not interested in that.”
Duren averaged 19.5 points per game during the regular season, but his production dropped in the postseason, managing just 10.2 points per game during the playoffs.
That disappointing playoff performance seems to have raised additional questions about whether he deserves a maximum contract.
Duren could accept his $9.6 million qualifying offer for the 2026-27 season and become an unrestricted free agent next summer.
However, Siegel believes accepting that route would be a significant gamble for the 22-year-old center.
“Everybody I talked to says Jalen Duren is not going to be taking the qualifying offer that they think he would be absolutely crazy to do,” Siegel said. “So I tend to agree. I mean, you’re an All-Star NBA talent. You’re going to take the qualifying offer. That’s a major risk for you to do.”

The Pistons are carefully considering their broader financial situation, as they already have Cade Cunningham on a max contract.
Ausar Thompson is also expected to receive a big extension, and so Detroit appears reluctant to overcommit financially to Duren and risk creating salary-cap concerns down the road.
