‘Thank God We Lost’ — Lakers Fans Heave Sigh of Relief as LeBron James Injury Update Indicates Extended Recovery Time

Lakers fans expressed unexpected relief after the team’s playoff exit, as LeBron James' injury update confirms he’d miss multiple weeks of action.

For 22 seasons, Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James has been able to fend off Father Time and injury better than almost anybody, earning a reputation as one of the game’s true ironmen. However, even the most resilient body has its limits. The Lakers’ season ended in a disappointing first-round playoff loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves, and soon after, reports emerged that James suffered a knee injury.

Surprisingly, many fans were extremely grateful that the team’s season hadn’t continued.

Fans React to LeBron James’ Injury News With Surprising Relief

According to a report from Dave McMenamin and Yahoo Sports, James suffered a Grade 2 MCL sprain in his left knee during Game 5 of the team’s first-round series. The star forward is expected to miss three to five weeks. If the Lakers had managed to advance, this timetable would have ruled him out for much of the next series.

On social media and across fan forums, Lakers faithful shared a surprising sentiment following the team’s early playoff exit: relief.

“Thank God we lost,” one fan wrote on X.

“Now he’s got all summer to rest up. What a lucky guy,” said one user on X.

While some were grateful, other commenters took the opportunity to throw shade at James’ injury news. “Is there anything you can count on more than hearing an injury report on Lebron after he’s eliminated every year?” another fan commented.

“Bruhhhh klutch sports doing the most,” said one more fan, speculating on James’ injury being revealed after the series loss.

“Every. Single. Time. He. Gets. Eliminated. Early.” stated one more user on X.

James, who turned 40 during the regular season, played through a groin injury during the second half of the season and still showed flashes of brilliance. In the elimination game on April 30, James posted 22 points, seven rebounds, and six assists.

Lakers’ Postseason Push Fell Short After Luka Dončić Deal Sparked Hope

The Lakers shocked the NBA world at the trade deadline by acquiring Luka Dončić from the Dallas Mavericks. The deal was surprising, and most believed it was lopsided in Los Angeles’ favor after giving up forward Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and their 2029 first-round pick in the deal.

The blockbuster trade immediately rejuvenated the fanbase, and the team climbed in the Western Conference standings, ending the season with the third seed. The excitement was building for Dončić and James, showing instant chemistry.

Yet, even with Dončić’s arrival, the Lakers lacked the frontcourt depth and consistent defense to make a deep run. Dončić’s struggles on the defensive end were magnified during the Timberwolves series. The rest of the Lakers’ supporting cast failed to maintain consistency, and first-year head coach JJ Redick’s lineup management was heavily scrutinized.

Meanwhile, Lakers fans face the reality that this year’s early playoff exit likely spared everyone a more painful downfall.
