The New York Knicks live to see another day. Sealing a Game 6 victory over the Detroit Pistons and heading to the second round of the playoffs, the Knicks have one man to thank — and it’s Jalen Brunson.
Entering Game 6 against the Pistons with a narrow 3-2 lead in a series has been extremely physical and down-to-the-wire; the Knicks felt the pressure of the matchup, especially following a disheartening home loss in Game 5. But under the bright lights and the hostile Detroit crowd, Brunson proved why he was recently awarded the title of the NBA’s Clutch Player of the Year.

In every game that the Knicks played in Detroit, Brunson’s ball-handling was met with boos. Detroit’s crowd has been relentless. In the fourth quarter of Game 6, Pistons guard/forward Ausar Thompson did a masterful job locking down Brunson. For a stretch, it looked like Brunson had finally been neutralized following his 30-point performance throughout the first three quarters.
But clutch players only need one moment.
With the score tied in the final seconds and Thompson draped all over him, Brunson put the young Pistons player on skates and drained a deep three that put the Knicks up 116-113. A fumble from Malik Beasley on the other end effectively sealed the victory for New York and ended the Pistons’ miraculous season.
Brunson finished the night with 40 points, four rebounds, and seven assists, solidifying his reputation as one of the league’s most reliable closers.
Knicks fans erupted, and social media was bombarded with admiration for Brunson’s ice-cold performance in the final seconds.
Actor and renowned Knicks diehard Ben Stiller tweeted, “Brunson was tired of hearing the boos.”

Another fan compared Brunson to legends, saying, “Modern day kobe. Willing his team to victory. Wont be denied.”
Others just marveled at the final play and Brunson’s reliability down the stretch.
“40 rack in a close out game against a top 6 defender. Respect his gangster,” said a fan.
“Best shot of the playoffs so far and it’s not close,” said one more user on X.

With the victory, the Knicks advance to face the reigning champions, the Boston Celtics, in Round 2 — a daunting matchup by any standard. While the Pistons had a miraculous turnaround season and proved themselves to be a team worthy of postseason appearances in the future, the Celtics are an entirely different beast.
The Celtics roster is about as deep and well-rounded as it’s gonna get. Boston’s offense is relentless, and its numerous shooters should instill fear in the hearts of Knicks fans. Nevertheless, with closers like Brunson and superstars like Karl-Anthony Towns, this series will be another entertaining matchup for NBA fans.
