Magic HC Jamahl Mosley Reacts to Paolo Banchero Criticizing Orlando’s Lack of Second-Half Adjustments

Jamahl Mosley responded pretty bluntly about Paolo Banchero's criticism of the Orlando Magic after losing to the Detroit Pistons.

The Orlando Magic have been among the NBA’s biggest disappointments this season because, in a year where the Eastern Conference has been wide open, they have been alarmingly average. The struggles have gotten so bad that Paolo Banchero has publicly criticized the team following their latest loss, and head coach Jamahl Mosley doesn’t exactly agree with the sentiment.

Jamahl Mosley’s Response Does Not Align With Paolo Banchero’s Comments

After the Magic lost to the Detroit Pistons on Sunday, Banchero told reporters that teams adjust to them and that the Magic don’t know how to respond. In response, Mosley had a different perspective on what happened.

“I think the one adjustment that Detroit made last night, they just played a little harder,” Mosley told reporters, per The Orlando Sentinel’s Jason Beede. “They got into the ball, they grabbed at it a little more, they clogged the paint a little bit more and our decisions became slower because there were a lot of gaps.”

Mosley’s perspective was not aligned with Banchero’s, as he elaborated further on why they beat the Magic.

“There was no schematic adjustment that they made. It was more or less (along) the lines; they did turn up their defensive heat a lot more. If you look at the third quarter, they had about two or three blocks at the rim.

“They turned us over. They built walls in transition. As we were getting downhill in the first half, they were building a bigger wall than we were able to get downhill in those situations. And then they did a great job of getting downhill offensively after we had turned that basketball over or they got a block at the rim.”

The Magic’s struggles, but watching this unfold in real time makes it look worse. Banchero is understandably frustrated, but it feels like he was calling out the Magic as a team, while Mosley was defending what happened.

What makes it worse is that the Pistons are what the Magic were supposed to be: the Eastern Conference’s newest contender. Because little progress has been made, they’ve drawn plenty of criticisms, from questioning if Banchero is a contender’s alpha dog to whether Mosley is the right basketball mind for this team.

This could potentially get worse, especially if the Magic don’t make the playoffs. Heads are going to roll if they don’t. It wouldn’t surprise anyone if Mosley is out, but it also wouldn’t surprise anyone if they start entertaining offers for Banchero.
