Luka Dončić Rivals Michael Jordan With Historic 40-Point Average Across Lakers’ 6-Game Road Trip

Luka Dončić's performance during the Lakers' road trip gives him an achievement that no one's done since Michael Jordan.

Luka Dončić has been playing some of the best basketball of his career over the last few games. His high-powered offense has been on full display lately, and his latest 40-point performance has placed him in the company of Michael Jordan.

Luka Dončić’s Scoring Averages Rival Michael Jordan

Since the Los Angeles Lakers started their six-game road trip, Dončić has been playing like a man possessed. Since their game against the Houston Rockets on March 16 at the Toyota Center, the Slovenian star has overwhelmed opponents on their own home courts with a near-unstoppable offensive barrage.

In fact, since the road trip began, Dončić’s lowest-scoring game was one in which he dropped 32 points. The highest? A 60-point output against the Miami Heat on Thursday (March 19).

He continued that string of impressive offensive performances on Wednesday (March 25) against the Indiana Pacers. That was his team’s last road game before a return to L.A. for a three-game homestand.

During the six-game road trip, his high-scoring games allowed him to achieve a 40.7 points-per-game average. According to a post by ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, he is the first player ever to put up these kinds of numbers since Jordan.

“Luka Dončić is the first player to average 40 points over a six-game span, all on the road, since Michael Jordan in 1986,” McMenamin said.

Dončić’s string of incredible offensive outputs did not coincide with the Lakers’ away games. Even before they went on these six games away from home, he was already putting up insane scoring numbers.

In fact, the last time that he had scored under 30 was on March 5, when he had 27 in a loss to the Denver Nuggets. In the 11 games since then, he has averaged 39.5 points per game.

Aside from the 60 he dropped on the Heat, this also includes a 44-point outing against the Pacers on March 6, 51 points against the Chicago Bulls on March 12, and a 40-point game against the Rockets on March 18.

Dončić is currently leading the league in scoring, averaging 33.6 points per game. This is only slightly higher than Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s 31.5 ppg, but if the Lakers star continues to have these kinds of games, then he might end up with the second scoring title of his career.

Aside from being the league’s most prolific scorer this season, he has also been contributing to winning elsewhere. Through the 61 games he’s played thus far, he’s also averaged 7.8 rebounds and 8.3 assists.
