The LeBron James sweepstakes are officially underway. After spending eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, the longest continuous stint of any of his four stops in the league, he officially announced his departure from the franchise.
Now, teams are lining up for a 41-year-old who is somehow still the cream of the crop in free agency. While recruitment pitches have included various factors, one analyst kept it short and simple when describing what he believed would be “poetry” on the court.
The Most Straightforward LeBron James Recruitment Pitch
As speculation grew about James potentially asking out from the Lakers, a ton of different teams neared the top of the list. The New York Knicks, before they won the NBA championship, seemed like a primary contender, which was later confirmed by Rich Paul himself.
Additionally, the San Antonio Spurs, who lack a true veteran presence on the team, also seemed like a possible destination. The obvious reunions with his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers or the Miami Heat, fresh off trading for Giannis Antetokounmpo, also made sense.
Then, the Philadelphia 76ers joined the fray. After replacing Paul George with a younger, healthier superstar in Jaylen Brown, they have also been trying to entice the four-time MVP. Simultaneously, the Minnesota Timberwolves have been hot on their heels as well.
However, through all of the speculation, one team has remained a prime landing spot, the Golden State Warriors. A chief rival in James’ legendary career, he faced off with the team four consecutive times in the NBA Finals.
But as the last beacons of a bygone era, it could serve as the perfect swansong for the 22-time All-Star as well as Stephen Curry. Add in a familiar face in Draymond Green, who has become one of James’ closest friends, and the reasons intensify.
But for David Dennis Jr. of ESPN, the real reason for James to go to the Warriors is rather straightforward. “It would be a dream team for a myriad of reasons. Let’s talk from the fan’s perspective.”
When Curry appeared on James’ podcast, the two described their partnership at the Olympics as “perfect basketball.” Dennis, too, shared similar opinions, pointing to the clear evidence of the two stars working in synergy.
“What we recall from the Olympics was basketball beauty, was poetry on the floor. It was LeBron James getting the ball to Stephen Curry right in the pocket, before he could even realize that the ball was coming to him.” As a result, he was completely sold on the idea, as he dreamed about what that team-up could look like.
“It was LeBron James and Stephen Curry on the two-man game. LeBron coming off of those pick-and-rolls, or Bron in the dunker’s spot. Add Draymond Green in there. This is potentially going to be a beautiful, beautiful game of basketball. And it’s going to be must-see no matter where they go.”
However, it wasn’t just the enjoyment of the fans that was going to inform this decision. For someone as hungry for success and as driven to win at the highest level, results were always going to be the ultimate deciding factor. But Dennis was sold on that regard, too.
“This is winning basketball to put these veterans together, who are still playing like their guys, 10 years younger than them. Steph is still at 26 a game, LeBron can still give you 20 and 10 on a given night. Draymond can still play his level of defense. We don’t know what Jimmy Butler we’re going to get, but if he’s healthy later, this is an old team, but a team that can play basketball at a very, very high level. ”

23 years into the league, it is highly likely that this is the last stop in James’ legendary career. Already leading the NBA in multiple key categories, including games and minutes played, time is winding down on his career.
But a final chapter in the Bay, with a longtime career rival and a close friend, might be the perfect swansong for him. The ESPN analyst certainly thinks so, as he described what it could add to James’ lengthy resume.
“There’s no better story than LeBron James teaming up with his former rival, with the best rivalry that we’ve seen in the 21st century in basketball. These guys playing together is a beautiful end to his story, and one that I really do hope he’s actually considered.”
An unrestricted free agent for the first time in nearly a decade, James holds all the cards to himself. But the allure for the Warriors is extremely enticing. And it might be a poetic end to one of, if not the greatest career in league history.
