The Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, and Miami Heat have emerged as the early favorites to land LeBron James in NBA free agency.
However, after a major shake-up in the Eastern Conference on Wednesday, a new team is looming as a potential suitor for the 22-time All-Star.
East Contender ‘Throws Hat Into Ring’ for LeBron James
According to The Athletic’s Tony Jones, fresh off stunning the NBA by landing star wing Jaylen Brown in a blockbuster deal with the Boston Celtics, the Philadelphia 76ers have their eyes on James.
“The Philadelphia 76ers have expressed interest in acquiring free agent forward LeBron James, a league source who spoke on condition of anonymity to describe ongoing deliberations told The Athletic,” Jones wrote.
“On the heels of Wednesday night’s blockbuster trade for Jaylen Brown — which sent Paul George and multiple draft picks to the Boston Celtics — the Sixers have thrown their hat into the proverbial ring for the star forward, who became an unrestricted free agent after eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers.”
The insider added that the 76ers could mark an ideal landing spot for the aging four-time MVP to settle into a complementary offensive role alongside Brown and stars Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid.
“Philadelphia makes sense from a basketball perspective. The 76ers have enough scoring, depth, and ballhandling at the top of the roster to allow James to ease into a role,” Jones continued. “And with James — or even without him — Philadelphia projects as a championship contender.”
As reported by ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, James is willing to hear from every interested NBA organization. Philadelphia, which has formed a Big 3 by unexpectedly landing Brown, now has as strong a case as any team in the league.
It was also revealed by ESPN senior NBA insider Shams Charania that James does not intend to make a “financially driven decision,” meaning he could potentially sign a minimum contract with the 76ers, allowing them to retain their core while still having access to $10.3 million under the hard cap and up to $6 million via the mid-level exception.
James, who averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists in the 2025-26 season, has the opportunity to join a 76ers group that features a 28.3-point-per-game scorer in Maxey, a 26.9-ppg scorer in Embiid, a 28.7-ppg scorer in Brown, and a 20-year-old standout in VJ Edgecombe.
This potential starting unit, with Maxey and Edgecombe handling the backcourt duties, James and Brown on the wing, and Embiid anchoring the frontcourt, would arguably be one of the most dangerous starting fives since the 2019 Warriors.
As it stands, the 76ers’ depth and overall bench unit leave a lot to be desired, but when you have the chance to acquire what many view as the greatest basketball player of all time, you put all the chips on the table.
Time will tell whether James has any interest in heading to the City of Brotherly Love, but this opportunity may very well be his best chance at his fifth championship in what could be his final NBA season.
