LeBron James has changed NBA teams three times. As he enters free agency, the legendary basketball icon is getting ready to change teams a fourth time. He’s clearly searching… for something.
He’s scored more points than anyone else. He’s been to more All-Star games (22) than anyone, and has been named to the most All-NBA teams (21). Perhaps most importantly, James has won four NBA Championships, taking home Finals MVP honors each time. But the 41-year-old still isn’t done.
So, what’s next?
LeBron No Longer Chasing Checks Or Rings
According to ESPN’s lead NBA insider, Shams Charania, this free agency tour won’t be about getting the biggest payday. It may not even be about chasing another ring. For James, it’s the pursuit of happiness.
“LeBron James, point blank, wanted an opportunity to go somewhere he could have happiness. What does happiness mean? Sources close to James told me, a place where he can play meaningful basketball and can compete on a night-to-night basis.”

“So for LeBron James, the priority in leaving and going to a new home is finding that happiness, and finding a place where he can compete at the highest level,” Charania continued. “I’m told this is not going to be a financially driven decision. LeBron will not be in a rush to make a decision.”
It was back in 2009, when Scott Mescudi, otherwise known as Kid Cudi, revealed he was on the “Pursuit of Happiness”. We’re about to find out what that looks like for James, who, like Cudi, is a fellow Ohio native.
Charania specifically named the three teams James is rumored to end up with: the Warriors, Cavaliers, and Miami Heat, all of which still view themselves as contenders.
Other contenders will surely join the fray. The Minnesota Timberwolves are reportedly interested, and other teams will likely be linked to the future first-ballot Hall of Famer in short order.
The question is, what is the best fit for James as he seeks “happiness?” Only he may know the answer to that question right now, and it may even be a mystery to him.
Nevertheless, from the way Charania made it sound, James won’t jump to a rapid conclusion in the next few hours or even days. Don’t expect an ESPN drama reboot of ‘The Decision’ either.
But you can be sure that when James makes his announcement, the NBA world will be talking nonstop about his potential impact on his next team. For now, all we can do is wait and enjoy the show.
