LeBron James’ uncertain future looms large over the Los Angeles Lakers heading into the 2025-26 NBA season. Amid ongoing speculation, one Eastern Conference scout boldly predicted the aging superstar forward’s most likely next move. James’ contract situation has been a major storyline throughout the offseason.
After opting not to pursue an extension with LA, he is set to play on an expiring $52.6 million deal, positioning himself for 2026 free agency. Approaching his historic 23rd season, several possibilities have been floated for the 21-time All-Star, from retirement to joining his fourth franchise, or even playing in a new league entirely.
East Scout Weighs In on LeBron James’ Outlook Beyond 2025-26 NBA Season
On Monday, ESPN released its annual NBA offseason survey, sharing insight from 20 coaches, scouts, and executives. One question regarding “where LeBron James will be at the start of the 2026-27 season” prompted six different responses.
The most common, edging out the four-time MVP calling it a career, was his re-signing in LA for his 24th campaign and ninth with the Purple and Gold. The full survey results are as follows:
Los Angeles Lakers: 7
Retired: 5
Cleveland Cavaliers: 4
Golden State Warriors: 2
Dallas Mavericks: 1
Miami Heat: 1
ESPN also attached a quote from one East scout, who leaned toward James extending his Lakers stint, seemingly struggling to pinpoint the 40-year-old’s most likely alternative landing spot. However, the anonymous respondent acknowledged that, if given the chance to make a broader prediction, he would gravitate toward James signing elsewhere next summer.
“If I was taking the Lakers or the field, I’d take the field,” the scout said. “But I’ll take the Lakers over any specific team, especially given they are the one with a clear path to pay him.”
Until then, LA’s level of success this coming season is expected to heavily shape James’ plans. His agent, Rich Paul, has been adamant about how much his client “values a realistic chance of winning” his fifth NBA championship before his time as an elite player comes to a close. Meanwhile, James reportedly remains undecided on his retirement timeline.
The Lakers continued to build around James and his co-star Luka DonÄŤić this offseason, ahead of the dynamic duo’s first full campaign as teammates. They added size and backcourt defense to last season’s 50-win team, signing center Deandre Ayton and veteran guard Marcus Smart in free agency.
If LA’s new-look roster gels and achieves a deep 2026 playoff run, James may be inclined to stick around, especially considering his well-documented family ties to the city.
