LeBron James Free Agency Landing Spots: 4 Teams to Watch As the NBA Legend Leaves Lakers

LeBron James announced that he is leaving the Lakers. Here are four landing spots that make sense for the NBA legend as he enters free agency.

The NBA’s free agency period begins today at 6 p.m. ET, and all eyes are on LeBron James as he decides what to do ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.

James recently announced that he is leaving the Los Angeles Lakers. With James poised to join a new team, here are several landing spots that make sense for the NBA legend.

4 Free-Agency Destinations for LeBron James Entering

Golden State Warriors

After Draymond Green declined his $27.7 million player option this summer, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported some shocking details.

“This move gives the Warriors flexibility to pursue LeBron James in free agency and Anthony Davis via trade to form a Big 4,” the NBA insider wrote.

James, Davis, Green, and Stephen Curry would certainly be a fun squad to watch. The Golden State Warriors also re-signed Kristaps Porziņģis to a two-year, $40 million deal. After years of competing against each other, Curry and James could finally share the court as teammates, as they did when they led Team USA to a gold medal in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

If James and Curry win an NBA title together, it would create a storybook ending for both all-time greats.

Cleveland Cavaliers

The Cleveland Cavaliers took James with the No. 1 pick in the 2003 NBA Draft. He spent a total of 11 seasons with them across two different stints, including the 2016 NBA Finals. The 41-year-old could return to Cleveland to finish his career where it all began, forming a Big 5 with James Harden, Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen.

The Cavaliers would need to add shooting if they brought back James. Harden and Mitchell would be the only reliable threats from deep in that projected starting lineup.

However, Cleveland likely needs to shed salary to bring in the 22-time All-Star, unless James is willing to take a massive paycut. There have been rumblings that Allen could be the odd man out in this scenario. If that happens, the Cavaliers would be wise to bring in a replacement center who could stretch the floor, giving James, Mitchell, and Harden more space to operate with the ball in their hands.

Miami Heat

James played for the Miami Heat from 2010-2014, winning back-to-back titles in 2012 and 2013. Miami swung for the fences and acquired Giannis Antetokounmpo in a blockbuster trade with the Milwaukee Bucks this summer.

Now, the Heat could try add James to the mix to form a trio of Antetokounmpo, James, and Bam Adebayo. While James is not the elite defender he was years ago, Antetokounmpo and Adebayo will do a lot of the heavy lifting on that end of the floor.

Similar to Cleveland, Miami would need to add more shooting for its offense to run smoothly with James. The Heat addressed this potential issue when they re-signed Simone Fontecchio to a one-year deal, but they are also rumored to be targeting veterans such as Bradley Beal, Khris Middleton, Tim Hardaway Jr., and others.

San Antonio Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs could emerge as a dark-horse candidate in this race. They just became one of the youngest teams in NBA history to advance to the Finals, and James could provide valuable mentorship and championship experience to San Antonio’s already battle-tested young core.

What would be the driving force behind James wanting to play for the Spurs? Victor Wembanyama. De’Aaron Fox already wanted to go to San Antonio when he asked the Sacramento Kings for a trade during the 2024-25 campaign.

The sky is the limit for the 22-year-old, and perhaps James will want to team up with Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper.
