With the 2026-27 NBA schedule released, fans’ focus should have shifted to anticipating their teams taking the court in a few months. But for two fan bases, uncertainty looms about the lineups their squads will trot out.
Kawhi Leonard’s return to the Toronto Raptors has been marred by controversy, leaving the trade in limbo. As the league investigates allegations that the Los Angeles Clippers circumvented the salary cap, the two-time NBA champion made a public appearance in Toronto, much to the delight of Raptors supporters.

After winning a historic championship in 2019 with Toronto, Leonard chose to move on from the franchise and sign with the Clippers instead. Since then, the team has gone through multiple iterations, but he hasn’t added any more hardware to his résumé.
After much speculation, the two sides agreed to a trade this offseason, sending Leonard back to the Raptors in exchange for Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, and draft capital. However, the deal has been put on pause due to an investigation involving the seven-time All-Star.
The situation stems from the Clippers allegedly trying to circumvent salary-cap restrictions to lure Leonard to LA in 2019, leaving Toronto unwilling to assume the risk of any potential punishment.
An appearance from the two-time NBA Finals MVP at the women’s quarterfinals of the National Bank Open in Toronto on Tuesday further stirred the pot.
As Sportsnet captured Leonard walking into the building, San Antonio Spurs reporter Dusty Garza provided insight into his appearance.
“Kawhi Leonard pulled up to the National Bank Open in Toronto with his longtime girlfriend Kishele Shipley (college sweethearts from SDSU and parents to two kids together) and Sam McDadi, the top realtor in Toronto Area and official real estate brokerage of the Raptors,” Garza wrote.

Many others also speculated that Leonard’s appearance was pretty clear evidence of how the investigation was going to pan out.

For some, though, Leonard’s recent public appearances could be a sign of an admission of guilt. One observer wrote, “Kawhi has never showed his face this much, them saxophones getting louder.”

It remains to be seen if the deal will go through. But for the time being, the two franchises remain in stasis until an official verdict on Leonard and the Clippers’ culpability comes through.
