NBA Rumors: $23,046,751 Forward Granted Permission To ‘Explore’ Trade Market in Hopes of Finding Deadline Deal

NBA trade rumors heat up as the Spurs give a $23M forward the green light to explore the market ahead of the deadline.

We’re officially past the halfway point of the 2025–26 NBA season, and front offices around the league are beginning to reshuffle their rosters ahead of the playoff push. The San Antonio Spurs, however, are enjoying one of their most promising seasons in years and are expected to approach the trade deadline conservatively.

Still, that hasn’t stopped the team from granting a young guard permission to explore the trade market in hopes of landing a deadline deal.

Spurs Grant 22-Year-Old Forward Permission To Explore Trade Market Ahead of Deadline

According to Marc Stein of The Stein Line, former first-round pick Jeremy Sochan and his representatives have been granted permission by the San Antonio Spurs to explore potential trade options away from the franchise.

“League sources say that Jeremy Sochan and his representation have received permission from the Spurs to explore the landscape for a potential new home via trade,” Stein wrote.

Sochan was selected ninth overall by the Spurs in 2022. He averaged over 11 points per game in each of his three seasons, with this year appearing to be a make-or-break campaign as he approaches the end of his four-year, $23,046,751 rookie deal.

However, injuries derailed Sochan’s season early, and he never established a consistent role. He has since largely fallen out of the rotation, seeing only sporadic minutes. Even with starting power forward Harrison Barnes struggling at times, head coach Mitch Johnson has shown little interest in giving Sochan extended opportunities, and he now averages a career low 13.1 minutes per game.

After flashing promise early in his career, Sochan has appeared in just 27 games this season and is averaging a career low of 4.2 points and 2.7 rebounds per game. His shooting has also regressed, as he’s connecting on just 25.7 percent of his three-point attempts.

Given the steep drop-off, an extension seems unlikely, making a trade the most logical outcome for both sides. That said, expectations for a significant return should be tempered. Salary filler and a future second-round pick, perhaps as far out as 2032, may be the most realistic haul.

However, The Ringer’s Zach Lowe recently noted that San Antonio could explore packaging Sochan with a first-round pick in an effort to acquire a reliable rotation player. Such a move would likely be part of a larger deal, with the Brooklyn Nets frequently mentioned as a potential trade partner.

One name that has surfaced in speculation is Michael Porter Jr., though any deal of that magnitude would require additional pieces and financial maneuvering.
