It will be immensely difficult for any active NBA player, or those in the future, to aim for the goal of breaking Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James’ scoring record.
What James has done to achieve the incredible feat involves multiple things to go in the ideal direction. Former All-Star Jeff Teague gave his thoughts on the idea of players reaching for James’ historic record.
Jeff Teague Thinks LeBron James’ Longevity Lies in His Health
James is going through his 23rd season and counting, setting an NBA record. He has scored 43,008 regular-season points (and counting) throughout his career, while adding 8,289 points in the playoffs. He did an incredible job at keeping himself healthy while playing at an elite level as one of the greatest players to ever play the game.
Teague talked about James’ efforts to set these records during a Feb. 23 episode of the Club 520 podcast. He cited James’ healthy and superstar production, factors that played crucial roles in allowing the Lakers’ veteran star to make history in the way he did.
“Nobody going to be healthy enough to break the record. Like, think about it he is a super superstar was healthy for all 20 plus years straight. I think Bron miss like one season where he missed a bunch of games with that ankle injury when he first got to the Lakers. He done played healthy for 20 plus years bro that’s crazy,” Teague said.

James will undoubtedly be a first-ballot Hall of Famer when he decides to call it a career. At age 41, he continues to play a big role in how successful the Lakers can be in the 2025-26 season.
What Lies Ahead for James and the Lakers
James recently earned his 22nd All-Star selection, taking part in the NBA All-Star Game earlier this month. He is averaging 21.7 points, 7.1 assists, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.1 steals per game throughout 38 appearances. He is shooting 49.7% from the field, including 30.3% from beyond the arc, and 75% from the free-throw line.
Los Angeles has a 34-22 record on the season, holding the fifth spot in the Western Conference standings. They have a tiebreaker advantage over the Minnesota Timberwolves and lead over the Phoenix Suns by two games. However, they trail the Houston Rockets by 0.5 games and the Denver Nuggets by one game.
The Lakers will prepare for the final game of an eight-game homestand. They host the Orlando Magic as tip-off will take place on Feb. 24 at 10:30 p.m. ET.
