Jayson Tatum Reveals He Always Met His Rehab Goals Ahead of Schedule

Tatum gave some insight into his rehab process, revealing he’s always tried to exceed expectations. Tatum said, “Whatever the plan was, I was like two weeks ahead of that physically, but we never rushed anything. We never skipped any steps.”

Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla has tried to keep the hype regarding Tatum’s return under control, but the anticipation builds after every game.

Tatum is averaging 20 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game in his return to action. While Tatum has been inefficient shooting the basketball, he’s contributed in other areas. He’s crashing the boards, providing some playmaking, and, perhaps most impressively, is already in sync defensively.

It doesn’t appear that Tatum is playing with any fear or hesitation, something his mentor, Kobe Bryant, would likely be proud of.

The Lakers icon would also likely be proud of Tatum’s work ethic, as he seemingly attacked the rehab process aggressively without going overboard. Jaylen Brown has had an MVP-caliber season, and it doesn’t appear that Tatum’s return to the court will disrupt the chemistry. The Celtics are 4-1 in their five games with Tatum in the lineup.

Tatum’s return should also help take pressure off combo guard Derrick White, who has struggled at times this season when defenses gave him more attention with Tatum out. White is shooting a career-low 39.5% this season, but Tatum’s return should help him settle back into his natural role of floor spacer when defenses focus on the Celtics’ All-Star duo.

The Celtics still have a shot at catching the Detroit Pistons and securing the top seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs. With the team’s frontcourt depth somewhat lacking, they’ll need Tatum to continue finding his shooting range again. However, Mazzulla has said there’s no extra pressure on Tatum, and Tatum is likely taking things one day at a time.
