‘I Might Never Find That Ever Again’ — Giannis Antetokounmpo Makes Emotional Confession After Blockbuster Trade To Heat

Giannis Antetokounmpo reveals why pursuing a trade out of Milwaukee felt risky but necessary to avoid future regrets.

Giannis Antetokounmpo had been at the center of the NBA’s biggest trade saga since last season. The question surrounding the superstar forward was never if he would leave the Milwaukee Bucks, but when.

The answer arrived this offseason as the Bucks shipped their longtime franchise cornerstone and Bobby Portis Jr. to the Miami Heat in exchange for Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel’el Ware, Kasparas Jakučionis, and multiple future first-round draft picks.

While South Beach prepares to open the 2026-27 season with a revamped roster, the two-time MVP admitted that stepping out of his comfort zone, though terrifying, was an essential decision to preserve his championship dreams.

Giannis Antetokounmpo Makes Candid Admission Post-Heat Trade

The Bucks selected Antetokounmpo with the 15th pick in the 2013 NBA Draft as a teenager out of Greece. Now, 13 years, one NBA championship, and two MVP awards later, the Athenian has grown into one of the league’s most dominant two-way forces, thanks to his massive frame and elite athleticism.

After his move to the Heat became official, the 31-year-old sat down with former Bucks broadcaster Jim Paschke to discuss the deep-seated anxiety that comes with changing teams and the ever-present fear of the unknown.

”I’m scared of change,” Antetokounmpo said. “I’m scared that the grass is not always greener. … People love me here, people respect me here, people allow me to be myself here in this city, and I’m scared that I might never find that ever again.

”I see guys playing deep into the playoffs, and I think, ‘Okay, maybe if I switch teams and I go somewhere else and have a better opportunity, I can play deep in the playoffs, I can go chase another championship,’ because I really want that.

“And I’m scared that maybe if I don’t take that decision, that when I’m going to be 37, 38 years old, hopefully when I’m retiring, I’m gonna say, ‘Why? Why you didn’t take that risk?'”

Saying goodbye to the only NBA home he has known since entering the league is a bittersweet moment for the 10-time All-Star. Yet, despite his exit, the love and respect remain mutual.

ESPN’s Shams Charania shared a statement from Bucks owners Wes Edens, Jimmy and Dee Haslam, and Jamie Dinan praising the former NBA Defensive Player of the Year’s lasting impact, noting that they “are incredibly grateful for what has been a remarkable and historic journey together.”

Following the official announcement, analyst Jake Weinbach confirmed via X that the organization will retire Antetokounmpo’s No. 34 jersey. The Heat’s newest superstar will also change his jersey number from No. 34 to No. 7.

Across 895 regular-season outings with Milwaukee, Antetokounmpo averaged 24.1 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game on 55.4% shooting. But the crowning achievement of his career came with the 2021 NBA title, which snapped Milwaukee’s 50-year championship drought.

Every trade is a calculated gamble for both the player and the organization. By choosing the Heat, “The Greek Freak” is prioritizing a stronger title window alongside Bam Adebayo while aiming to retire without lingering regrets.
