‘That Would Be Awesome’ — Giannis Antetokounmpo Leaves the Door Open for Eventual Return to Bucks

After 13 years with the Bucks, Giannis Antetokounmpo is moving on to Miami, but would he ever return to the team that drafted him?

Giannis Antetokounmpo enjoyed 13 mostly fruitful seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks, helping them win their first NBA Championship in 50 years back in 2021. But after a summer blockbuster trade that sent the two-time MVP to the Miami Heat, their time together is done.

Antetokounmpo led the Bucks to nine playoff appearances, but they were no longer viewed as title contenders in recent years. That, along with seemingly non-stop trade rumors, may have led the 31-year-old to become more open to a change of scenery.

While he’s moved on for now, would Antetokounmpo ever consider coming back to Milwaukee?

Giannis Antetokounmpo Would Love a Future Bucks Reunion

He hasn’t even played a game with his new team yet, but Antetokounmpo is already being asked about his nostalgic feelings for Milwaukee. Fans aren’t ready to let go of the greatest basketball player they’ve ever seen in Wisconsin, and they want to know: will the “Greek Freak” ever return?

Antetokounmpo addressed those questions with former Bucks play-by-play announcer Jim Paschke by saying it would be “awesome” to one day be back in a Milwaukee uniform.

“That would be awesome if I can go and play and maybe come back. Kevin Garnett did the same thing,” Antetokounmpo said.

While the 10-time All-Star is now on the wrong side of 30, he’s only locked into a contract with the Heat through the 2026-27 season. Yet, Antetokounmpo does have a $62.8 million player option for the 2027-28 campaign.

Though, as the great Garnett once said, “Anything is possible.” Perhaps Antetokounmpo can go to Miami and win another championship in his first or second season. If Milwaukee can make enough progress without its longtime superstar, maybe he’d consider a quick return.

However, after the Bucks finished with a 32-50 record this season while only getting 36 games out of Antetokounmpo, the roster may need considerable work before the future Hall of Famer legitimately considers a reunion. For now, fans in Milwaukee will have to keep wishing while occasionally tuning in to Heat broadcasts to witness what they once had.

The cold, hard truth is that now that Antetokounmpo has left, it could be hard to get him back. Without a superstar on the roster, recruiting big names to Milwaukee won’t be easy, but Antetokounmpo does have 13 years of history tugging at his heartstrings.
