‘Big, Bold, Gutsy Move,’ ‘Bringing In That Aura’ — NBA Pundit Urges LeBron James To Team Up With Victor Wembanyama’s Spurs

An NBA analyst implores LeBron James to join the Spurs in free agency to bring veteran savvy and steady playmaking to the rising juggernaut.

Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs’ lack of experience reared its head in the 2026 NBA Finals as they were stunningly upset in five games by the New York Knicks.

According to NBA analyst Skip Bayless, San Antonio should address its biggest shortcoming by bringing in the league’s most seasoned player of all time, Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James, in free agency.

Skip Bayless Pinpoints Spurs As ‘Best Fit’ for LeBron James

Much has been made of James’ impending free agency, with a third stint with his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers or a link-up with his longtime rival, Stephen Curry, on the Golden State Warriors, rumored as possibilities for the 22-time All-Star.

However, according to Bayless, if James leaves the Lakers, who are prioritizing building around 27-year-old superstar guard Luka Dončić, the 23-year veteran would be best served by latching onto the ascending Spurs.

While San Antonio won 62 games this past season and dethroned the then-reigning champion Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference finals, its lack of late-game poise ultimately proved costly.

Wembanyama and Co. blew double-digit leads in all four of their Finals losses, with seemingly no one who could steady the ship as the Knicks repeatedly mounted furious comebacks behind Jalen Brunson’s elite shot creation.

Speaking on Wednesday’s edition of “Gil’s Arena,” Bayless floated the idea of James serving as a veteran mentor and playmaker for the Spurs as they seek redemption, dubbing it an ideal situation for the four-time MVP.

“Hypothetically, that’s the best fit of all because if you could have LeBron play the point for them for 30 minutes a night, they would be much better, to me,” Bayless said. “His greatest strength is passing and distributing. He could average an easy 10, 11, 12 assists a night with that team.”

That said, the veteran pundit noted that adding such a high-profile star, even at age 41, could disrupt San Antonio’s momentum.

“It would be a big, bold, gutsy move because you’re bringing in that aura, you’re changing the chemistry,” Bayless continued.

If James were to take a pay cut to maneuver his way to the Spurs, teaming up with arguably the league’s brightest young superstar in Wembanyama could mark his clearest pathway to his fifth championship.

Across LA’s 10-game postseason run, James averaged 23.2 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 7.3 assists a night, proving that he can still be a difference-maker in high-stakes moments and more reliable than oft-maligned San Antonio star guard De’Aaron Fox.

Although given James’ reported preference to stay close to his family, an unforeseen move to Texas appears to be a pipe dream until further notice.
