At 41-27, Anthony Edwards and the Timberwolves sit sixth in the West, just a half-game behind the Rockets for fourth and homecourt in the first round. They’re only two games back of the Lakers for the third seed, but also just two games ahead of the Suns and a potential play-in spot.
With Edwards sidelined by a knee injury, the Timberwolves must tread water and avoid the play-in tournament. This may prove difficult for a team that was already struggling before Edwards went down.

Timberwolves Star Anthony Edwards Out 1-2 Weeks
The Timberwolves updated Edwards’ status, as reported by The Stein Line’s Marc Stein.
“The Minnesota Timberwolves have announced the following injury update on guard Anthony Edwards:
“An MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) conducted by Dr. Craig Bennett at Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine on Edwards revealed right knee inflammation. Edwards will be re-evaluated in 1-2 weeks, and further updates of his progress will be provided when available.”

If Edwards is cleared to play after his expected 1-2-week evaluation period, that would be the best-case scenario for the Timberwolves.
He is going to miss at least one very important game when the Timberwolves host the Suns on Tuesday night. Edwards had already been ruled out for that contest. The team has home games with the Utah Jazz and Portland Trail Blazers before heading to Boston to take on the Celtics on NBC Sunday night. Then, there is a huge showdown with the Houston Rockets on Wednesday night.
The goal would likely be to have Edwards return by the Houston game if his re-evaluation after 1-2 weeks permits, though an earlier return would be welcome.
Edwards is having another fantastic season. The 24-year-old is averaging 29.5 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 1.4 steals per game. He is shooting 49.2% from the field and 40.2% from three. These are outstanding shooting percentages for a high-volume wing like Edwards.
If Edwards, who has stayed largely injury-free over the last few seasons, misses more than half of the Timberwolves’ remaining games, he will be ineligible for postseason awards. He has already missed 10 games this season.
While Edwards is out, the Timberwolves will likely have to rely on Ayo Dosunmu, Bones Hyland, and Kyle Anderson. They will need these players to fill in during his absence.
The Timberwolves have lost four of their last five games after going on a five-game winning streak. They are in danger of falling out of the top six and into the play-in game. This makes Edwards’ speedy return even more important.
