Despite holding a strong 41-27 record, the Minnesota Timberwolves’ season feels disappointing, especially after recent struggles. Following a five-game winning streak, they have lost four of their last five, with double-digit defeats to current playoff contenders: The Orlando Magic, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, and Oklahoma City Thunder.
Despite a talented roster led by Anthony Edwards, the Timberwolves have encountered various issues that have led to their recent struggles.

Paul Pierce Believes Anthony Edwards, Minnesota Timberwolves Lack Leadership
Adding to this conversation, former Boston Celtics great Paul Pierce believes the Timberwolves are missing leadership. Pierce did want to clarify that he was not speaking about Edwards or former All-Star power forward Julius Randle.
“I think they lack a little bit of leadership. Not to say that Anthony Edwards is not a leader or Julius Randle,” Pierce said. “But I also think when you trying to win a championship, there is got to be somebody in that locker room that everybody respects that’s been to the promised land, to help you.”

To illustrate his point, Pierce referenced the veterans on his Celtics teams, noting that these players weren’t always superstars. “Like, for us we had veterans Ray, KG, myself but we didn’t win a championship,” Pierce explained.
He added, “Having James Posey in that locker room who won a championship was important for us. And I think that’s the one piece they’re missing, a guy that’s been around the block, that’s like look guys it’s playoffs time and lock in and practice habits right now, a lot of little things.”
This idea underscores the value of championship experience; veteran leadership can shape a team’s mindset and provide a proven blueprint for success.
Another example of this approach is the Thunder acquiring Alex Caruso before the start of the 2025-26 season. While they gave up a talent like Josh Giddey, Caruso’s title experience with the Lakers brought valuable insight, likely impacting the Thunder’s performance this season.
Where the Timberwolves Stand in the Playoff Race
Currently, the Timberwolves are tied with the Denver Nuggets for the fifth and sixth seeds. They’re just a game behind the Rockets for fourth and 1.5 games behind the Lakers for third. However, they also stand only 1.5 games ahead of the Phoenix Suns, putting a possible fall into the play-in round within reach.
Given this tightly packed race, Pierce believes that where the Timberwolves finish in the standings will shape their postseason outcome.
“I think with the teams jockeying for position, if Minnesota doesn’t get the No. 3 seed, it’s going to be a rough playoffs for them.”
Looking ahead, it remains to be seen whether the Timberwolves can improve their standing as the season winds down. They’ll return Tuesday night to host the Suns in a crucial game that could impact their spot in the playoff race or determine if they land in the play-in.
