Few anticipated what Mario Cristobal’s Miami Hurricanes accomplished last season, and the incredible postseason journey also let everyone see the crazy side of legendary Hurricanes wide receiver Michael Irvin. However, Cristobal shared his side of a hilarious, honest warning to Irvin heading into 2026.

Miami gave one of the most incredible experiences to its fans by outlasting Texas A&M 10-3 in the first-round College Football Playoff in 2025, and Irvin was having his best time on the sidelines following the win. As Cristobal was being interviewed following the dramatic 7-point win, Irvin surprised him by walking up from behind and planting a kiss on his cheek.
That win paved the way for Miami’s magnificent postseason run. The Hurricanes followed it up with wins over Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl and Ole Miss in the Fiesta Bowl to book a place in the national championship game.
Miami ultimately fell 27-21 to Indiana in the title game, but Cristobal still remembers Irvin’s unforgettable celebration.
“It’s important Michael Irvin never kisses me on the cheek on national television ever again,” Cristobal said at the Atlantic Coast Conference Kickoff media event in Charlotte on Wednesday, while speaking on the importance of having former Canes invested in the program. “That’s really important to point out.”

Last season marked a return to national prominence for Miami, reviving memories of the program’s dominant era in the 1980s. The Hurricanes captured their first national championship in 1983, followed by titles in 1987 and 1989. Irvin was a key contributor during that period, playing for Miami from 1984 to 1987.
Cristobal may still laugh about Irvin’s on-camera kiss, but he appreciates the continued involvement of former Hurricanes players, many of whom remain deeply connected to the program.

“But it’s also important to point out, and actually Mark Fletcher mentioned it, one of the best things we do is our alumni reunion, which had 400 plus members show up this year,” Cristobal said. “And you could imagine we should have rolled the ball out there and scrimmaged because such great players, such great teammates, you know, and guys that maybe weren’t great players, but were just excellent, just friends and brothers.
“That’s always been a big. I can’t emphasize enough what a major role that played. And once I got the opportunity, the privilege to return to Miami … it had to be done. I owe Miami. I do.”
Cristobal has gradually elevated the Hurricanes since taking over, improving from a 5-7 record in 2022 to a 13-3 mark last season. Keeping that success intact in 2026 will depend on another smooth quarterback transition, with Darian Mensah to take over after Carson Beck.
Meanwhile, Irvin remains extremely optimistic about Miami’s outlook, as the Hall of Fame receiver told On3 that he thinks the Hurricanes will finish the upcoming season undefeated.
